CW 2012 Season in Review

CW time (This network is a damn mess and this post was the hardest one to write).

Undecided/Still airing: Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, Ringer, The LA Complex, The Secret Circle and Nikita

Renewed: America’s Next Top Model (1 cycle), 90210, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries

Canceled: H8R, Remodeled

Final Season: One Tree Hill

Thoughts: The CW was an absolute mess this season. Once again they ended up with not one new show that they could legitimately call a success and their ratings for all of their shows are down across the board. Tough decisions will need to be made because unlike NBC, The CW will have to decide now if it is better to keep older, low rated shows on board for another year and risk more lows or clean house in the hopes of finding something that works. With that said, The LA Complex will not return on the CW (It’s a Canadian show and was renewed for another season there). Of the remaining shows it is highly rumored that Gossip Girl will be renewed but that its renewal will be for a final, 13 episode season.

There is a problem with a Gossip Girl renewal. The problem with that means that the CW will still have to cancel at least 2 of the 4 shows remaining. It’s believed that the CW is seriously considering picking up 6 new scripted pilots but what a lot of people aren’t taking into account (something they also didn’t do last year) was that the CW picked up a reality show.

There is no room on The CW’s schedule for 6 pilots (even if all are 13 episode orders) plus a reality show plus 6 or 7 returning shows so a lot of things will get left out (and no it’s not possible for Saturdays, Sundays or 10pm to come into play. Low ratings is why they got weekends taken away from them in the first place). What gets left out (either the undecided shows or the pilots) is left to be determined.

Still here’s the general consensus of the 4 remaining undecided shows. Hart of Dixie started off with low ratings however it’s ratings haven’t dropped very much and most of The CW’s other shows have all dropped to equal this show’s ratings. Ringer was the show with the most hype and promotion but ended its run being the lowest rated (at the time. The new low is The LA Complex) non-Friday CW show and it’s believed that this show will be one of the 2 definite cancellations. Nikita’s ratings have been poor all season but even its Friday low ratings pass might not be enough to save this show.

The Secret Circle got the cushy lead-in and for most of the season that was its one advantage over all the other shows. Since coming off its last break, The Secret Circle’s ratings have tanked and now it is even with Hart of Dixie, Gossip Girl and a few episodes of Nikita. If The CW looks at The Secret Circle’s full season average it will get renewed but a renewal means it will definitely move away from being behind The Vampire Diaries and the most likely place is Fridays (effectively forcing a Nikita cancellation or a 13 episode order of one or both shows)
