10 Cable Show Renewal Chances: 6 Month Report

I thought about doing a list like this in some form for some time now but I wasn’t quite sure how to do it at first. I thought about doing it in a way that would somehow evaluate my predictions but it wouldn’t be right to do it that way because there aren’t enough shows that have been canceled yet to get a true sense of how my predictions turned out.

I’m doing this list mostly because after 6 months an so many updates I’ve forgotten what’s still out there that hasn’t been decided on and it will help me remember which shows I need to check on or look out for. The next 2-3 months will be busy with cable networks setting their schedules in stone and gearing up for their winter launches (You will notice that from here until January there will be some shows starting on cable networks but most are sitting out until then so the renewal posts for the next 4-5 months will be very light and I’ll probably find myself redoing a lot of old predictions if the shows are still on because there won’t be too many shows to pick from. The one for October will begin that trend and it will be posted on Wednesday).

There are a few unofficial updates that I’ve seen about some shows and those will be noted. If a show is undecided here’s how you should look at it (You should also see this post to see what I consider to be a confirmed report).

1. Shows that are still airing are not going to be renewed unless the show is a hit and it’s a no-brainer to renew it.

2. Most networks are not going to make a decision on a show 1-4 weeks after the finale unless it was their intention to wait until the show ended to say something (and in that case it’s almost always for renewals and they knew they were going to renew it before the show ended).

3. If a show had mediocre ratings sometimes the network needs to see how a newer show does to consider if the old show is worth saving (Because it can tell them that either the problem was with the show or the problem was with the network as a whole).

4. Shows can be unofficially decided on and the network is just not going to say anything until they are ready to promote the new season (This is common for the Bravo and VH1 wives shows).

5. If a show is going to be canceled the network most likely isn’t going to say a damn thing about it unless it’s a scripted show (And that’s why I give shows 8 months. 95% of the time it doesn’t take 8 months to decide on a show). So that means the longer a show has been off (6 months+) then the more you should worry about it.

6. Final season announcements (though none would apply to the shows here) are not the same as cancellations. The network does not retroactively say that a show that just ended was the final season where there was a clear conclusion to the series. Final season announcements for cable shows are almost always renewal announcements (The only exception is if the announcement is made while the show is airing or on hiatus).

Update 10/10/12: I've decided that I will just update this post as decisions come in but any decision that was moved from it's previous standing will be in green.
