10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/29/14 Edition

I really do want to do a makeover for this whole site and while that's still a part of the plan I am not going to be able to do that anytime soon. I'll continue to make my regular posts here and I have a few extra posts planned at Bourgy for next month but otherwise I have a lot of extra things to take care of and it probably will be another month before I can get to working on things over here. Oh well for now there is this post and I'll be posting the scorecard post for April tomorrow. Be sure to check that one out because that post will have more renewals than any scorecard post I have ever made in the 2 years I've been doing them.

1. The Following (4.81 million 1.5)- FOX is in trouble. This was the most promising sophomore show they had and it limped through the season like this. I’ll elaborate a little more with the show below but FOX is in trouble.

2. American Idol (Wednesday: 9.02 million 2.1; Thursday: 7.68 million 1.8)- FOX expected this show to see some ratings declines. The show is on season 13 so they were legitimately expecting it to see lower ratings. They weren’t expecting to see ratings this low. When they canceled The X Factor it was done with the expectation that the erosion to this show would be minimal and that cancellation for The X Factor would be justified. Now that this show is flirting with The X Factor territory FOX has a real mess on their hands and that mess has ramifications that extend far beyond what this show can fix or cover up.

3. Supernatural (2.10 million 0.9)- Every spring is brutal for The CW and this year is no different. This show has shown that it is suffering the least from the regular spring declines. Since The CW is a little weird one can expect that it will likely return being a little bit stronger in the fall than it is now and the possibility of this show moving again is fairly strong but not 100% certain.

4. Nashville (4.33 million 1.0)- Specials don’t count much for anything. They really don’t and that’s why the numbers aren’t important here. ABC hasn’t renewed anything yet so that keeps the heat off of this show but decision time is imminent. ABC will not wait until the last episode of the season to make a call. The numbers suck but ABC is in a position where they really can’t afford to cancel this show because they are likely to renew only 3 rookie shows and those shows aren't exactly hits either (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Resurrection and The Goldbergs).

5. The Originals (1.50 million 0.6)- If Supernatural is the impervious show then The Originals would be the vulnerable show. Of the four top shows on The CW this show has suffered the most with spring declines. It is a little worrisome but The CW has all summer to think of a way to give this show a promotional push without taking the focus off of the rookie shows (none of which have been ordered to series yet. That will be revealed in the next couple of weeks).

6. Beyond Scared Straight (1.364 million 0.6)- This was probably the rockiest season yet of this show and it hung in there. I don’t see A&E making any major changes so I think they may choose to stay the course and try not to make waves with dismantling something stable in exchange for something untested.

7. The Fabulous Life of Atlanta (603,000 0.3)- These Fabulous Life specials have been mixed but they aren’t atrocious. I do think that the best of these specials (this ratings area) will represent the floor to their new Wednesday night lineup (Hollywood Exes, La La’s Full Court Life and Marrying The Game). All 3 shows are capable of doing better than 600k and VH1 should expect it because as it stands in my opinion all 3 shows are on thin ice for very different reasons and VH1 is looking for a reason to cancel all of them.

8. Let’s Stay Together (1.253 million 0.6)- I have to believe that this show is now in quite a bit of danger. BET had a prime opportunity to renew this show last week and instead they passed on it and only renewed The Game and Real Husbands of Hollywood (Being Mary Jane was already slated to return) while ordering a couple of new scripted shows to series. We know BET doesn’t have a very deep schedule but it seems like all of the slots they are comfortable with filling have already been filled and this could very well be the final season for this show. Though I’m aware tonight is the midseason finale for the show, it will be interesting to see if BET makes any kind of announcement during this time while the show is off the air.

9. Black Ink Crew (1.961 million 1.1)- These 5 episodes did exactly what they needed to do. They proved to VH1 that it has its own fanbase independent of Love & Hip Hop and Family Hustle and the show didn’t erode the overall season average. I would be shocked if this show doesn’t return for a third season. The cards are aligned in such a way that season 3 should be the strongest one yet for this show.

10. Married to Medicine (2.145 million 0.9)- This show really isn’t doing that much better than Blood, Sweat and Heels. The last couple of weeks probably could have seen better numbers if it were not for the NBA playoffs but one has to imagine that this show will take a pretty ugly dip in about 2-3 weeks and that won’t put the show in a very good place (though these early episodes should still push the show to a renewal).
