10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/22/14 Edition

I totally understand why ABC needed to end Scandal early this season. This picture was probably the best one out there that did a halfway decent job of trying to hide this woman's pregnancy.

1. Devious Maids (1.962 million 0.7)- Other than Game of Thrones, this spring is looking a lot weaker than the winter when it comes to these Sunday scripted shows. This is an acceptable start but Lifetime pretty much bet the scripted farm on this show so it better start working some of that magic it had for season 1 or else the perception will be that the show is not quite living up to expectations.

2. Scandal (10.57 million 3.4)- It is my understanding that this is a series high in total viewers but not in the demo. It’s still a very good showing for the finale. It came earlier than ABC would have wanted but make no mistake it will be renewed for a fourth season and even a fifth one (but probably not together because ABC doesn't really do the double renewal thing) because it is now the network’s highest rated drama.

3. Basketball Wives: LA (2.198 million 1.1)- It’s possible that we’re looking at the Monday version of a bubble show. While the show is currently VH1’s highest rated show of 2014 (a title it will hold for only 1 more week), it lags behind both Love & Hip Hop shows. This hasn’t stopped the show from getting renewed before but it can now if VH1 just wants to make a clean break from the entire Basketball Wives franchise and go all in with Love & Hip Hop. Basically no matter what happens, either result (renewal or cancellation) will be much of a surprise. This show makes a strong case for both choices.

4. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (1.904 million 0.9)- VH1 is not worried about these numbers at all. It seems plausible that this season will likely be split at some point (last word is that this season has 22 episodes) but that means it is guaranteed that the average for this show will skyrocket and the moment it gets behind Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (which will be in a couple of weeks).

5. The Crazy Ones (9:00: 6.18 million 1.6; Finale 5.23 million 1.3)- If this show wanted to do anything to make a case on why it shouldn’t be canceled these finale numbers did not help its case. It still has a very minor shot if CBS absolutely hates their comedy pilots and needs a throwaway backup but as far as a confident renewal goes, this isn’t getting one.

6. Awkward (1.629 million 0.8)- For a premiere this is ok but I’m not sold on it. It was helped by Teen Mom a little bit and it will probably be a couple of weeks until we get to see how much help the show received.

7. The Americans (1.386 million 0.4)- FX renewed this and yet these numbers are still low. They know this. They have a whole year (not including these next 5 episodes) to figure out what to do about it.

8. Celebrity Wife Swap (3.22 million 1.0)- This is super weak but with the ongoing trainwreck that is 10pm Tuesdays that has gone on for ABC in just this season alone shows that ABC doesn’t care anymore. This is doing slightly better than all those failures (Lucky 7, Killer Women and Mind Games) and it’s very late in the season so not much will be expected even if the ratings drop.

9. Veep (775,000 0.3)- Regardless of ratings, this show getting renewed isn’t a surprise. It is a little bit of a surprise that the renewal came this early in the season. HBO really wants their comedies to do well but they are just not on the same level as any of the dramas. However the dramas bring the eyeballs and the awards while the comedies manage to hold their own with garnering their own accolades. That’s all that matters unless the numbers get too low to sustain or HBO has better options on the horizon.

10. The Game (3.245 million 1.6)- This is proving to be a remarkably strong season for this show. It hasn’t seen the sharp declines that have plagued previous seasons after the premiere and that’s a very good thing because BET still hasn’t managed to find a strong #2 show yet (that is not to say that they don’t have options, just none that have fully proven themselves).
