10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/1/14 Edition

This week I decided to do something a little different and highlight all 4 shows (3 of which premiered last night) on VH1's Monday night lineup. As a spoiler of sorts, 3 of them did well while one lagged behind and may be in a little bit of trouble going forward.

1. The Walking Dead (15.678 million 8.0)- What many people don’t know about this show is that AMC took a risk with it. But the risk isn’t directly correlated with this show. Rather it is tied to Mad Men. A few years ago AMC thought that their resources were better spent pushing Mad Men to try to get it to mainstream popularity (it was popular among critics and people who give out awards but that was it). As a result they put up no fight when it came to the mutual decision to end Breaking Bad and cut the budget to this show (In addition to their debacle surrounding the final season of The Killing). In hindsight some could say wasn’t a very smart plan (as now Mad Men will begin the first half of its own final season in a week or 2 and it still will be nowhere near as popular as this show or Breaking Bad) but in other respects it looks like a genius plan because in what world can you operate on a slightly more than shoestring budget for 2-3 seasons and still get more than 10 million people to watch your show every week? It’s unheard of and that’s why this show will achieve legendary status when it ends its run.

2. Basketball Wives: LA (2.133 million 1.1)- I’m putting this here just because I wanted to see how these numbers from VH1’s Monday shows would look with this show as the anchor. This week and last week were the only 2 episodes of the season so far that have been over 2 million viewers. It’s not bad and this show is again trying to set itself up for yet another late season increase to earn yet another sneak renewal. However the night would be much better with a stronger anchor (which would greatly help that primetime average that VH1 loves to boast about).

3. Duck Dynasty (6.006 million 2.5)- This got a pretty healthy bump for the finale but that still doesn’t change the fact that this show has seen better days. As I said last week, this isn’t a dead show but it is show that should have A&E seriously considering when the end will occur and how they go about getting there.

4. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (2.244 million 1.2)- I am not surprised that this show grew from Basketball Wives, that’s what this show does. It will hold the audience of the show in front of it and then manage to find an extra 100k viewers to throw on top of it. It’s fascinating to be honest because it’s a sponge and yet in 4 seasons I still can’t tell you how many people legitimately like this show and would watch it with no help whatsoever (If I had to guess the base audience with no help is 1.4-1.6 million).

5. Beyond Scared Straight (1.208 million 0.5)- I guess A&E realized the error of their ways when they tried to take a stable Thursday lineup and move it to Fridays. It didn’t work, the replacement didn’t work and now everything is back to normal for now.

6. Black Ink Crew (2.247 million 1.2)- I am a little surprised that this show grew from Family Hustle. This show has never been a grower and in the past it has shown some compatibility issues with other shows but unlike Family Hustle, this show does have an identifiable base audience. Since this run only has 5 episodes it should do fairly well but I think season 3 is already a given and these are just some leftover episodes that really wouldn’t have fit anywhere else.

7. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.816 million 0.7)- In my opinion 3 part reunions are excessive. There is nothing in 15+ episodes that needs to be covered over 3 parts. It’s too much and the gamble isn’t worth it when the ratings really don’t increase very much from the regular episodes.

8. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (1.910 million 0.8)- My feelings on this show haven’t really changed over the last couple of months. I think TLC is a little disappointed that this didn’t see a boost for the finale but it is still one of their better rated shows so it will probably keep going until the family is tired of doing the show.

9. This Is Hot 97 (1.431 million 0.8)- Some of you might think this is jumping to conclusions but I think that people need to watch and see how VH1 operates with this show because as it stands right now I see it being this year’s version of The Gossip Game and I’ll be surprised if it isn’t moved to 11pm by the end of the month if these numbers don't start going up (They don't need to go up by much, just about 100-200k just to be safe but they don't have any room at all to go down).

10. Rake (1.90 million 0.4)- If you were one of those people who truly believed that maybe just maybe this show had a little bit of a chance to survive dash those hopes now and set a reminder to catch 2 of the last 3 episodes of this show on Saturday. Yes Saturday, a night even more dead than Fridays.
