10 Cable Show Renewal Chances: April 2014

After a month off this post is back but I won't make any promises about it being better than ever. To be honest it felt a little strange writing this post because only a couple of these shows have been on my radar in terms of ratings.

1. Mary Mary (WE TV)- WE TV is fully aware that their best night is Thursday nights. They are also fully aware that their best show is Braxton Family Values. So while every show won’t be compared to Braxton Family Values, it will be notable if a show reaches the same plateau as their top show and does so without help. That’s what we have here. Outside of an odd blip 3 weeks ago (where that particular episode was only seen by 563,000 viewers), the rest of the season has managed to do reasonably well with most episodes falling between 900,000-1.1 million viewers. That makes this a top-tier show on the network and top-tier shows get rewarded with renewals.

Verdict: 90% chance of renewal

2. This Is Hot 97 (VH1)- Only 2 episodes of this show have aired and I don’t typically like to do predictions for shows that have only aired 2 episodes but as I mentioned in the ratings blurbs post last week, I don’t think this has very much time on VH1’s schedule. The first episode came in with a disappointing 1.4 million viewers (0.8 demo) but Monday’s episode fared much worse with only 840,000 viewers (0.5 demo) tuning in for episode 2. If this weren’t a Monday show the numbers wouldn’t be very alarming but because it’s on Monday this show is in grave danger and I do believe this will get moved no later than when VH1 is forced to restructure their schedule next month.

Verdict: 30% chance of renewal

3. Preachers’ Daughters (Lifetime)- For some reason I meant to do a prediction for this show last season. However it didn’t happen but if it did I don’t think I would have been all that confident with that prediction. That being said, this show is doing a little better than last season. Only the last 2 episodes have pulled over a million viewers but that’s the kind of landscape we’re looking at here. This was a show that barely got renewed and now it is doing a little better with its second chance. Perhaps the growth will continue and put the show in an even better place.

Verdict: 70% chance of renewal

4. The Americans (FX)- This season the numbers are absolutely not where they should be. For a scripted cable show most agree that anything at or above a 1.0 demo is good and if a show is at a 0.7 demo then the numbers are acceptable. This season the numbers really haven’t been that close to a 0.7 demo. The last 5 episodes have averaged just below a 0.5 demo with 1.5 million total viewers. Though the numbers are a little low, FX seems to be indicating that they aren’t in panic mode and a renewal is under strong consideration so that’s what I’m going to have to go with.

Verdict: 60% chance of renewal

5. Total Divas (E!)- The season is fairly young for this show but things are far from grim. Everyone knows the situation with E! If the show is a Kardashian show then it will get over a million viewers and it is expected. Every other show struggles mightily with and without help from the Kardashians. This show hasn’t gotten the help from the Kardashians and it doesn’t need it because the show is still pulling over a million viewers. With the most recent episode seeing 1.5 million viewers there is no trouble on the home front and E! will move mountains to make sure that this show gets to another season.

Verdict: 90% chance of renewal

6. Basketball Wives: LA (VH1)- This show has always been an opportunist show. It has never had the best ratings or the most buzz but it is still around. This show also has a habit of posting late season growth. Last season the growth was a little more dramatic than this season (only because the early ratings were lower). If I told people that season 3 is actually trending ahead of season 2 I’m not sure how many people would believe me but it is true. Season 2 averaged 1.752 million viewers. Season 3 is averaging 2.006 million through 8 episodes. There are some strong outside factors that can keep this show from getting renewed (Primarily any new Monday 8pm shows that would push this off the schedule or an inability to maintain or turnover the cast) but from a numbers standpoint it does stand a decent chance of earning a fourth season.

Verdict: 70% chance of renewal

7. Dallas (TNT)- This show has been a mystery to me. It had a really great start for the premiere but since then the ratings have tumbled. Over the last month the show has been hovering around 1.8 million viewers with a 0.5 demo. That 0.5 demo can be a little worrisome but the numbers have been holding firm in this range for a while. Be aware that this is a tricky range because the numbers aren’t exactly screaming for cancellation either. For now I will err on the side of caution.

Verdict: 50% chance of renewal

8. Real Housewives of NYC (Bravo)- This season is very new so there is a high likelihood that I may do this prediction again at some point in the future (probably not next month. I doubt my feelings will change before then). Anyway, I thought the numbers for the early part of last season were shaky. Let’s be honest, 1.6 million for a Real Housewives show is a little low. Now Bravo wishes this show could get 1.6 million again. This season has been worrisome with numbers hovering at 1.3 million viewers with a 0.5 demo. Tuesdays are a boring night but we know that Bravo wasn’t going to have this show airing Sundays or Mondays. Still, this is low and the only thing the show has working in its favor is time. There is still a long way to go but the numbers are going to have to improve because I think Bravo has exhausted all of their options on retooling this show.

Verdict: 50% chance of renewal

9. Project Runway Presents: Under The Gunn (Lifetime)- Project Runway is a big thing for Lifetime. For years they have had to hang their hat on the main show because they put in quite a bit of effort to keep the show alive. Now we’re at yet another spinoff and the numbers are similar to how Project Runway All Stars performed the first 2 seasons. Over the last 5 weeks the numbers have averaged about 1.5 million viewers with a 0.5 demo. Lifetime has shown that these are reasonably acceptable reality numbers for them so I don’t see why anything would be different this time.

Verdict: 75% chance of renewal

10. Chrisley Knows Best (USA)- I’ll be the first one to tell you that I have no idea what this show is about. Before yesterday I wasn’t sure what night it aired on. That’s mostly because this show is very odd in the sense that it repeats fairly well. The repeats on some nights (Mondays mostly) perform just as well as the new episodes on Tuesdays. Now a show pulling 1.1 million viewers with a 0.5 demo isn’t much to jump for joy over but USA isn’t heavily into the reality game (They tend to leave the reality shows to Oxygen, E! and Bravo). I’m leaning towards this being good enough to get another season for now.

Verdict: 60% chance of renewal

Update 1: As of 4/14/14, USA has renewed Chrisley Knows Best for a second season.

Update 2: As of 4/16/14, FX has renewed The Americans for a third season.

Update 3: As of 5/19/14, E! has renewed Total Divas for a third season.

Update 4 (2/9/15): It's been a while since I last updated this post so I will outline the updates. Preachers' Daughters and Real Housewives of New York City were renewed for new seasons. Dallas was canceled. The rest of the shows still have undecided fates and of that group, Basketball Wives LA has the best chance to return for another season.
