10 Ratings Blurbs 12/17/13 Edition

Mostly a lot of season and winter finales on this list. I know some shows will be back with new episodes a lot sooner than others but unless it's a season premiere I only look at the day-by-day schedules. I have enough loose notes hanging around.

1. Nashville (5.18 million 1.4)- I could be wrong but I don’t think this show is going on hiatus as long as the Sunday and Thursday dramas are (none of those are returning until late February/early March). Unlike those shows, this one doesn’t need a long hiatus because its chances for getting renewed are not assured and a hiatus is unnecessary because there aren’t any major scheduling conflicts that would hit this show hard. These numbers are low and while it could be in danger, ABC has had awful luck with their dramas this season (so far only Agents of Shield would be the rookie drama to get renewed and even that is looking like it might be a pity renewal) so if that trend continues this show might scrape by with another season. If ABC finds any new show that gives them some life then this show’s prospects will get dimmer.

2. Masters of Sex (1.207 million 0.4)- While it’s a good thing that this show increased for the finale I would think that Showtime has to be a little disappointed because Homeland saw a pretty sizeable bump too. I think they have to know that this show will likely need to be paired with Homeland again next season because if not they could be looking at a disaster.

3. Amish Mafia (1.478 million 0.6)- For a holiday special episode, I’m not surprised. What I think is odd is that they did a holiday special and still haven’t officially renewed the show for a third season. Of course they wouldn’t waste their time with doing a special if a third season was off the table but this was the opportunity to make the word official.

4. Sons of Anarchy (5.172 million 2.8)- Good showing for the finale and nobody expected anything less. Now that season 7 is officially a go, the only thing left up to decide is if season 7 will be the final one or if FX and the show’s creator believes that there are still some stories left to tell since the ratings will not be a deciding factor in ending the show (Cost may be a factor but that is far beyond what I am willing to touch)

5. Chicago Fire (9.32 million 2.1)- I don’t think I’ve ever paid attention to this but this is a pretty dramatic skew. It is highly odd because The Voice got about 2 million more viewers than this but was also a little more than 1 demo point higher. You don’t typically see shows skew this old on NBC especially when it has a lot of help from a demo friendly show. The numbers itself are good but the skew makes me think the demo should be much higher than this.

6. Arrow (3.02 million 1.1)- It doesn’t matter what place this show finishes the year as. As far as The CW is concerned this show could finish fourth on the network and they would still be happy because it means they have 3 other shows with higher ratings than this. Renewal here is already assured and for them their only worries at the moment are figuring out how many of their 5 rookie shows this season will actually earn a renewal because there’s no room for pity renewals this year (The Originals is basically a lock for renewal but Reign and The Tomorrow People will have to contend with 2 other rookies for some very limited real-estate).

7. Duck Dynasty (8.885 million 3.5)- I am amazed that this many people watched a holiday special. I know it’s December and TV is pretty boring but wow this is something (and is it me or does it seem like networks now actually want to be competitive for the first half of December? They used to just close up shop from Thanksgiving to New Year’s). A&E is prepared to bring the heat in January and that means Wednesday shows need to be prepared to feel the pain all over again.

8. Chrissy & Mr. Jones 2 (2.140 million 1.0)- Considering that there was no Love & Hip Hop to anchor the night, this is a fairly decent showing. This doesn’t change my opinion about the fate of this show one bit. If anything I think this has solidified its status and well VH1 really has no reasonable excuse not to renew this show for another season. It’s the #3 show on the network this year.

9. Homeland (2.384 million 0.9)- While Masters of Sex was maybe a tad bit disappointing on Sunday, this show is far from it. Sure they were telling themselves that they were going to be fine without Dexter and yes they do mean what they have been saying but numbers like this makes the network feel like they don’t have to lie to themselves and give them any sort of pep talk to convince them that this is their flagship show. So they have a good, solid show going into next year and they just need to continue to work on developing stronger shows.

10. Two and a Half Men (8.54 million 1.9)- This is what it looks like to see a show die a very slow and painful death. Some people think last season should have been the final season. Some people think that this season should be the final season. Whatever happens, CBS is going to have to figure out this mess because they have only one comedy that isn’t in its final season that actually deserves to be renewed. That means any possible combination of renewing and canceling is on the table and this is not the year where CBS needs to do 85% of their renewals in March because that will let the other networks know that there is blood in the water (Personally I think if CBS does any early renewals they don’t need to renew more than 10 shows. I think they have 7-8 that will be good with an early renewal but the rest need to wait until May).
