10 Ratings Blurbs 12/10/13 Edition

Would be just my luck that the 10th came today but there aren't any shows here that were discussed in the predictions post earlier. That doesn't mean I was able to pick 10 shows I really wanted to talk about. The important thing is there are 10 shows here.

1. Braxton Family Values (839,000 0.4)- Thursday nights in December are basically a wasteland. These numbers are fine and they will keep being fine. Just giving the appearance of maintaining some level of viewer interest is good enough for this show and that is what is going on here.

2. Mob Wives: New Blood (1.318 million 0.7)- If you can remember all the way back to January (that feels so long ago) this show is way down from the season 3 premiere (1.8 million but go look in the VH1 2013 ratings post. The exact number is there). On the surface it is very good for Thursday nights but this is Mob Wives and Mob Wives does have a history of strong starts followed by some tough and disappointing declines. This show doesn’t have the padding that seasons 2 and 3 had so any declines from here are going to look painful. Hopefully the numbers stay steady but anything can happen.

3. Chicago Fire (8.22 million 2.3)- NBC knew what they were doing by placing this show behind The Voice. This show had potential last year and they were struggling. Instead of taking the risk on more rookies, they put this show there. Yes the ratings are up from last season but I don’t know too many people who believe that this show will maintain its ratings without The Voice. Still NBC is in such dire straits that this show’s numbers could be cut in half and it would still have a shot at renewal so you won’t see too many complaints here.

4. Black Ink Crew (2.031 million 1.1)- After the first 7 episodes saw nothing but increases, each of the last 4 episodes have come in with lower numbers than the one before. A likely explanation could be that the NFL matchups over the last month have gotten better because Chrissy & Mr. Jones has seen similar declines as well. The show is still in good shape and there’s nothing to be concerned about here.

5. The Originals (2.33 million 1.0)- The CW honestly has to be crying tears of joy here. They had a fall where none of their rookie shows so far have flopped and all have a chance of getting renewed. Of the rookies this one is the sure renewal and it’s honestly a good thing because it didn’t need help to do it. This may be the year where The CW doesn’t have a completely disastrous spring because they do have four strong shows.

6. Scandal (8.27 million 3.0)- It sucks for ABC that they have to cut 4 episodes from their highest rated show but they have no choice. It doesn’t really hurt its syndication chances because this show needs a fifth season to be eligible for syndication anyway and a fourth is just about guaranteed now. ABC is going to have a tough spring trying to keep their ratings afloat and losing 4 episodes here is not going to help matters. Hopefully this makes them try harder at cultivating a stronger development season.

7. Glee (3.29 million 1.1)- If I remember correctly this show is moving to Tuesdays when it returns from its hiatus. I’m fairly certain it’s not a good thing but at this point it can’t be all that bad either. The damage is done. FOX can’t keep limping along with 4 comedies on Tuesday, they need to use American Idol to launch a new scripted show and like it or not they have already committed to one more season of this show. Not an ideal situation all around but the moves they made had to be done.

8. Supernatural (2.42 million 1.1)- The CW has had a very good fall and surely this show deserves some of that credit. As the veteran scripted show on the network it has done its job of holding the gains it made last season and creating a perfect fit with a rookie show in The Originals. Season 10 is definitely on the horizon.

9. Anger Management (655,000 0.3)- I’m not sure how many episodes of this show are left. I don’t keep up with stuff like that but my goodness FX will be happy when they finish getting through all the rest of these episodes because I would hope they have learned their lesson about ordering 90 episodes after looking at suspicious numbers from the first 10.

10. Criss Angel: BeLIEve (623,000 0.3)- It’s times like these where I really wish I paid more attention to Spike’s overall ratings because I can’t shake the nagging feeling that these numbers really aren’t that great. I don’t know what to make of them. I wish I knew the landscape of this network a little better.
