10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/24/18 Edition

A broadcast show ends its season for the final time. Another begins its own final season run.

1. Scandal (5.462 million 1.3)- Seven years ago, this show had a very short season (it premiered in the spring) and it averaged about a 2.0 demo. Back then, a 2.0 on broadcast made this a very uncomfortable bubble show. ABC’s prolonged drama woes, the short episode count and the late premiere were most likely what worked in this show’s favor. Of course, the mid-point of season 2 began its meteoric rise and the show managed to coast on that until last season. ABC made a smart move to call it quits now, but I’m sure they are terrified about their future because they just don’t have a deep roster of decent drams performers.

2. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.796 million 0.6)- It’s not a strong finish, but I get the feeling that after the first couple of seasons of the show, Bravo now just looks for good enough. It’s a mediocre show with mediocre expectations pulling slightly above mediocre ratings.

3. Black Lightning (1.678 million 0.5)- This show had high expectations when it was picked up. Then, it was curiously left off the fall schedule. Typically, that means the pilot didn’t resonate with network heads. It still got a cushy spot (dampened by the fact that The Flash went on winter break for a large chunk of the season). It managed to show some stability over the course of the season and now the biggest question is if The CW thinks it deserves a spot on the fall schedule.

4. Real Housewives of Atlanta (2.319 million 0.9)- The reunion episodes performed better than the finale, but the numbers are still a little disappointing to close the season. The show has been renewed and there’s plenty of time to work the bugs out before it returns in the fall.

5. Hip Hop Squares (Premiere: 844,000 0.4; Episode 2: 757,000 0.4)- Last season got off to a great start, but it faded quickly and by the end of last season, it became obvious that the show didn’t deserve to stay on Mondays. That wasn’t a great position for VH1 because halfway through the season, they had already renewed the show and committed themselves to a lot of episodes. This isn’t a terrible start, but these numbers are going to have to stay in this range to have a reasonable chance for survival.

6. The Challenge: Vendettas (745,000 0.5)- This could have done a little better to close the season, but it has certainly made a case for itself to come back for another season. I expect it will because MTV seems to believe that the strength of their network depends on the health of their veteran shows.

7. Teen Mom OG (1.241 million 0.7)- I put this show in same boat as the show above this one on the list. It’s coming back because it’s a veteran show and it’s a stable performer for MTV.

8. Vanderpump Rules (1.442 million 0.6)- I have nothing to say about the ratings. This is just on the list because Bravo recently did their spring renewal dump and this show was on the list of shows set to return.

9. The Challenge: Champs vs Stars (567,000 0.4)- Pretty typical numbers for this show. I realize the seasons are much shorter than a normal Challenge cycle, but we’re getting into overexposure territory and the numbers don’t really justify doing so many seasons in such a short span of time.

10. The Originals (969,000 0.4)- This show got a little bit of a reprieve for its final season. The show was set to air on Fridays, but some dismal freshman performances elsewhere meant that The CW would much rather use Fridays for burnoffs and let this season (and its modest numbers) air on Wednesday nights. The ratings probably won’t be pretty, but I can’t see it pulling 0.1 in the demo either.
