10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/17/18 Edition

A lot of things stopped me from getting this post up sooner. I suppose the important thing is that I still managed to finish it today.

1. The Walking Dead (7.916 million 3.4)- Ratings wise, it was a bit of a rough season. It can be easy to forget that this is a cable scripted show wrapping up its eighth season. That is not an easy feat to accomplish. Even with the declines, the numbers are still strong enough to allow the show to go on for as long as everyone involved wants it to go.

2. America’s Next Top Model (869,000 0.4)- This got close to a season-high, (about 9,000 viewers off) but this is a strong showing for a finale and I think it has done well enough to return.

3. Fear the Walking Dead (4.090 million 1.6)- We know how the story goes here. The show has a big premiere because it airs after The Walking Dead. Then, the show gradually falls to a point that looks embarrassing if compared to the main show but still rated higher than nearly every other show on AMC. AMC shows generally survive with a 0.3 demo. I don’t think this show will get that low this season.

4. Jersey Shore: Family Vacation (1.684 million 1.0)- This is down from last week’s premiere but it is still an above-average showing for MTV. I still think they were hasty in renewing the show before it even premiered, but then this is the network that said they were ending the first Teen Mom show and they have done at least 2 more seasons since that proclamation (and will probably do another season because they can).

5. Supergirl (1.911 million 0.5)- Now that the weird, schedule juggling is over with, this show can finish the rest of the season with no breaks and relief for the fans since they all know the show is going to return next season.

6. American Idol (Sunday: 6.351 million 1.3; Monday: 6.970 million 1.4)- We’re beginning to approach the point in the show where this large investment might not be paying off the way ABC wants it to. That puts ABC in a bind. Because it’s so late in the season, they don’t have a lot of time to decide if they want to dedicate their schedule next season to this show. If the answer ultimately decides to be no, they will probably be forced to renew a couple shows that are on the bubble or order a couple of pilots that they are currently iffy on. We still have a few more weeks before those decisions become final and it’s not like this show will air in the fall if it gets renewed.

7. Teyana & Iman (1.382 million 0.7)- There are a few things going on here that may work in this show’s favor. First, the demo is decent despite the viewership totals not being where the network wants it to be. Also, VH1 seems to really like family oriented shows and they only have one other show like that on their current roster (the show that airs after this one). Finally, it has become obvious that Love & Hip Hop Atlanta is not the ratings behemoth that it had been up until this season. I still think the numbers are a little low to justify a Monday renewal, but I don’t see it as a dead show walking either.

8. Real Housewives of New York City (1.272 million 0.4)- This is on the low end for what is typical for the show. It’s still early in the season and there’s a lot of time for those numbers to come up.

9. The Flash (1.822 million 0.6)- The show returns from a short break to close out the season. It’s running out of gas, but that goes for most shows still airing this late in the season.

10. Gotham (2.366 million 0.7)- The show is probably a bubble show going by numbers alone. I don’t think it is, but it might be if FOX wants to get really ambitious next fall. It’s time to start thinking about stuff like that. Keep in mind that should this show be renewed, it is either going to change nights, premiere early before going on an early hiatus in October, or it will be held off until December or January. The reason why? FOX made a deal to carry a handful of Thursday night NFL games for the next 5 years. Personally, I think option 3 is the best option because FOX likes to go big in midseason, but to varied degrees of success and CBS and NBC have shown that trying to work around the NFL damages their schedule a little more than they would like to admit. With Gotham, it is at least a known entity and it is already eligible for syndication.
