10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/1/18 Edition

It's the beginning of May. The fates of most broadcast shows should be announced within the next 7-10 days. Meanwhile, cable will begin their shift to their summer schedules.
1. American Idol (8.767 million 1.9)- This came up quite a bit for only airing one episode this week. Maybe the fans like the format adjustment. We’ll see, but there isn’t a whole lot of time left to make a lasting impression.

2. Jersey Shore: Family Vacation (1.449 million 0.9)- This is doing well enough for MTV that the network believes their Thursday night powerhouse lineup is back. Personally, I think that’s spin. They’ve got something worth keeping in this show. Jury is out on the other stuff (even though they plan to keep that too).

3. Teyana & Iman (1.479 million 0.7)- This is going to end the season with an average just barely hitting that 1.5 million mark (That is, if you round up. The average is 1.462 million). I made the case a few weeks ago why VH1 would want to keep the show going. Whether they will is another matter entirely.

4. Homeland (1.300 million 0.3)- This season did a decent job of helping Showtime stay above water this winter and spring. It’s going to have to come back around the same time it started this year or else the final season runs the risk of being overshadowed by the final season of Game of Thrones.

5. Dancing with the Stars: Athletes (8.480 million 1.1)- This is a highly abbreviated season of the show and it’s not off to a good start. It may be another hidden victim of ABC going all out to make room for American Idol.

6. Braxton Family Values (879,000 0.3)- This is doing very well for WE. It’s a shame that these numbers don’t carry over to the lead-out. The cable reality landscape has changed. The path to success is not trying new stuff to search for the one stratospheric hit (unless you have to). The thing is going with what is stable and known and walking that fine line between keeping the known entity from becoming stale and not making too many outlandish tweaks to mess it up.

7. Leave it to Stevie (Episode 7: 1.182 million 0.6; Finale: 1.198 million 0.5)- I’m still of the belief that this is the end for the show. It’s a strange show because it’s best described as a reincarnated version of a spinoff. The thing it had going for it was that it always had numbers to keep going even if VH1 didn’t necessarily have a place for it. This season, it lost that guarantee and while I won’t declare it dead, don’t be surprised if you never hear about it again.

8. Little Women: LA (815,000 0.2)- These actually are better numbers than we’ve seen over the past several weeks. It’s worth monitoring to see if this is a trend in a more positive direction for this season.

9. Elementary (4.735 million 0.6)- Despite the late start, CBS ordered a full season, so this will air well into the summer. When I looked this up a few days ago, I saw that this isn't the official final season of the show. Either that news will be clarified over the next couple of weeks, or CBS will stay mum to see how viable this is as a summer show.

10. Arrow (867,000 0.3)- I know a lot of broadcast shows saw some really ugly numbers on Thursday, but I blame that on coming upon the last few weeks of the season. I’m curious as to where this lands on next year’s schedule.
