10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/22/18 Edition

The summer season hasn't begun just yet, but the broadcast networks are ready to call it quits after a long season.
1. American Idol (Sunday: 7.469 million 1.3; Monday 8.679 million 1.6)- It’s going to come back next year and I wouldn’t be surprised if ABC wants to tweak it a little. The ratings are not exactly where they expected them to be and they can’t afford for them to go too much lower next year.

2. Dancing with the Stars: Athletes (8.771 million 1.4)- Even though the ratings weren’t where they wanted, it’s going to be difficult to see what goes on with this show next year. They already have a normal cycle and a Junior cycle scheduled for next fall (the kid one was supposed to air this year, but it got bumped for American Idol). They may want an abbreviated version for one of those shows to air next spring, but you can’t call this one dead either because (current and former) athletes are in abundance, and you can’t beat 4 weeks on air.

3. Shaunie’s Home Court (Premiere: 1.102 0.5; Episode 2: 978,000 0.4)- VH1 actually renewed this show months ago and I thought the decision was perplexing because season 1 only aired 4 episodes and it changed nights after 2 weeks. Because of that weird scheduling, the premiere is actually way up from last season’s opener (that got 665,000 viewers) and not that far off from the finale (1.176 million). I don’t know what to make of this show, for all I know, these are probably leftover episodes from season 1 packaged with a few new episodes to cobble together a whole season.

4. Riverdale (1.279 million 0.4)- This show faded pretty fast after it’s surprisingly hot start in the fall. It’s an average performer for The CW and that is mostly why it will retain its 8pm anchor spot. The only expectations this show will have going into next season is to help the new show behind it find an audience.

5. MasterChef Junior (8:00: 3.083 million 0.7; Finale: 3.553 million 0.9)- The broadcast networks put more effort into Fridays next season. Each of the five networks have decided to go with at least one hour of scripted programming on the night. That’s actually not a horrible thing for the Gordon Ramsay shows. These shows have proven to be stable and it will be helpful if FOX doesn’t need to call on this show in the winter to make up for major failures elsewhere.

6. Arrow (1.305 million 0.4)- I figured something would have to move because The CW needed to account for Sundays and they weren’t going to do a night with 2 new shows. Supergirl is making the move to Sunday nights and this show will move to Monday. It will continue to be a 9pm show. It’s not likely to end next season (The network has three announced final season shows for next season), but the end is not that far in the future.

7. The Originals (802,000 0.3)- The CW may be moving on from this show in a few months, but they still want to hold on to a piece of the franchise. They have ordered a new show (Legacies) and placed it on the fall schedule. Expectations won’t be super high, but it’s going to need to at least match the numbers we’ve seen from this show this season to have a chance at getting an episode extension. It’s not as if they aren’t giving the new show a decent chance to survive (it’s going to air behind Supernatural).

8. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.- (1.880 million 0.5)- This show (along with Gotham) was one of the last shows to have their fates known in the flurry of renewals or cancellations. It made for a highly uncomfortable weekend for fans of both shows. In the end, ABC decided to renew the show. They have only ordered 13 episodes, they have not announced it to be a final season and right now, it is set to return next summer (it returns sooner if they are very desperate with flops on their hands. Think CBS with Elementary).

9. Gotham (2.197 million 0.6)- A lot of what I mentioned in the post above applies here except for the fact that we know that next season will be the final season. It’s not on the fall schedule (not surprising because of football). The only question will be and where it will go when it returns (My best guess is not Wednesday or Sunday).

10. Once Upon a Time (2.266 million 0.5)- This a pretty tepid showing for the final episode of the season. It’s a show that some believe should have ended last season. What’s done is done and the network is moving on. It was a genre show that had a pretty good run (much like the show it was initially compared to at the beginning of its run…Grimm).
