10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/30/18 Edition

February is always a tricky month for television. Networks are going to take their risks wherever they see fit. Unfortunately for the average viewer (particularly fans of broadcast shows or shows that air on Sunday nights), that means a whole lot of breaks, hiatuses and just overall weird scheduling are on the horizon.

1. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.248 million 0.6)- The broadcast schedule (specifically ABC, NBC and CBS) will take part of the night off for the State of the Union address. The broadcast networks might be in for a mixed bag, but the cable news networks should see a bump tonight. In recent years, the networks that have chosen to air their normal schedule have seen decent numbers. Watch out for those shows tonight. Most of them will see steady numbers or even a slight increase in their viewership.

2. Real Housewives of Atlanta (1.986 million 0.7)- It is highly unusual to see this show go below 2 million viewers, but Bravo (and most networks) were in a tough spot here. The Grammy Awards were pushed up two weeks because of the Winter Olympics. Almost all networks choose not to air original programming during the Super Bowl. That means that networks need to choose to gamble and take a three week break, air their Sunday shows somewhere else for at least a week or choose to take only one of those two major events off. Since the Super Bowl destroys everything on television, the real question will always be about what to do for Grammy’s week. It didn’t work out too well for them this time, but hopefully they have an engaging episode ready to go in a couple of weeks.

3. RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (895,000 0.5)- I expected this to do well because the main show came over from Logo and did well. I’m actually surprised that VH1 figured out how to anchor four nights at the same time. Their next step should be trying to pair some shows up with these anchors. They can start by trying to move some already established Monday veterans rather than ordering brand new shows.

4. Love & Hip Hop (1.883 million 1.0)- This is the first week that this was edged out by Love & Hip Hop Miami. I won’t call it a bad sign for this show. The numbers have been pretty stable this season (the exceptions being the premiere and the 2 episodes that aired the week before and on Christmas). I do see it as a sign that Miami may be finding its own identity. We’ll see, but this season isn’t over just yet.

5. Teen Mom (1.237 million 0.7)- MTV will continue to try to air unknown shows, because they, like most networks, are constantly looking for lightning in a bottle. It has worked for them in the past. They are also learning to hold on to shows. In the past (actually, this show is a perfect example of that), they would try to end shows when they started their decline. They believed it was better to go out on top than to squeeze the life out of a show. Television has changed and while viewers are still fickle, they are more loyal too. You don’t see shows peter out until there is no one left to watch. Either they watch or they don’t watch. Veteran shows have a floor and these numbers appear to be the floor for this show at this moment.

6. Real Housewives of New Jersey (1.299 million 0.5)- The landscape over the last couple of weeks hasn’t changed except for the fact that Bravo is throwing out their customary, end of season test balloon that cast changes may be forthcoming and the behind the scenes situation is more dire than it actually is. I don’t expect the show to be canceled. I do expect that they will try their damned hardest to shake up the cast any way they can.

7. Little Women: Atlanta (9:00 798,000 0.3; 10:00 728,000 0.2)- The problems plaguing this show are the problems that have plagued the franchise over the last year. The numbers are good enough for the show to keep going. There’s nothing here that says the show should or would be canceled after this season. It’s just hard to believe that it wasn’t that long ago when this show was hitting nearly double its current numbers.

8. The Challenge: Vendettas (739,000 0.5)- The show took a step back from the last couple of weeks, but the numbers are still acceptable. This may be one of the shows that sees a ratings increase tonight.

9. Vanderpump Rules (1.537 million 0.6)- I think Bravo wishes that they could have found more successes like this show with their other Real Housewives spinoffs. Yes, they have other shows that they continue to stand by, but they don’t have a spinoff that can deliver the same numbers as the original show without needing to air it with the original show.

10. Ridiculousness (567,000 0.2)- If the show didn’t air on Fridays, I doubt MTV would care about treating this show all that well. They are still inconsistent about the scheduling (airing anywhere from 1-4 episodes per week at any given time), but at least the show has so many episodes under its belt that MTV can run marathons for hours and they don’t have to feel pressured to have full seasons ready to go every 3 or 4 months.
