10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/17/18 Edition

This is the last week for a while where everything gets delayed because a holiday fell on a Monday.

1. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.298 million 0.6)- This isn’t the strong start that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing with this show, but these aren’t awful numbers. It just brings the show a lot closer to their other headline shows (Specifically Queen Sugar and Greenleaf). We will have to see what happens now that there isn’t a large ratings cushion to keep the season average high. Remember that there are a lot of episodes in reserve, so fans shouldn’t worry about the show coming to an end anytime soon.

2. Supergirl (2.168 million 0.6)- These are pretty good numbers, but I’m not sure they will matter all that much. It is only on for the next 4 weeks before it goes on an even longer hiatus. By then, the people at The CW will have already made their decision internally on the fate of this show (Personally, I believe it will be renewed and recent history suggests that they may make that announcement official by the end of this month).

3. Mama June: From Not to Hot (904,000 0.3)- This didn’t start as well as last season, but these numbers are still far ahead of almost every other show that has aired on WE since it ended. It’s even more astounding that the show is getting these numbers on a Friday. Strangely enough, this show still has that odd demo skew that it had with the TLC predecessor, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (I know this show is more about the mom than the child, but be honest, this show does not exist on this network if TLC had never canceled their show).

4. America’s Next Top Model (856,000 0.4)- This isn’t as good as last season’s debut, but keep in mind that last season started out on Monday nights (It was moved to Wednesdays after 8 weeks). That being said, the show will be fine as long as it stays close to this level, especially when you consider the fact that this is the first time that VH1 has made a real effort to air something in primetime on Tuesday nights.

5. Real Housewives of New Jersey (1.260 million 0.5)- I feel as if this show is in the same predicament that the New York show found itself in a few seasons ago. It was as if the producers tried to do everything they could to find another spark until they finally settled on the right combination of original and newer cast members. They may have to do the same thing with this show because while these aren’t the worst numbers, the show has seen better days and history from this franchise has shown that a show can receive new life after a slump if the appropriate changes are made.

6. Married to Medicine (871,000 0.3)- I wanted to fit this in on the list last week, but there was no room for it. I suppose that was a good thing. It seemed odd that last week’s episode went over a million viewers out of seemingly nowhere, and I wondered if it was a fluke. The jury is out for me. The numbers could have been a fluke, but these numbers are also noticeably above most episodes that have aired so far this season.

7. Ridiculousness (8:00 701,000 0.4; 8:30 710,000 0.4)- These numbers are higher than usual. I believe the earlier timeslot may be the catalyst for those numbers because Fridays at and after 9pm has quietly gotten quite competitive with cable reality shows as of late.

8. The Challenge: Champs vs Stars (609,000 0.4)- We’re getting close to the end of this season, and I think that there is enough evidence here to support MTV perhaps doing another cycle of this. It doesn’t have to be long like their normal Challenge seasons, but it has shown that it can air during dead portions of the schedule and be okay and it can air with the main show and contribute to increasing the primetime average. I just hope they don’t see these last two cycles as a reason to do overkill here. I’m just making the suggestion that they could possibly see this show in the same light that Lifetime does with their Project Runway shows.

9. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (Sunday: 1.443 million 0.7; Monday: 1.331 million 0.7)- This is not a new thing for the show. E! has typically doubled up on episodes the week after they covered a major awards show. I’ve found that the Monday episodes are always lower than the Sunday episodes, but these results are pretty close together. I would say it is a testament to the fact that this show is not going to gain any more fans, but the fans it still has won’t abandon the show in large numbers just yet.

10. Love & Hip Hop: Miami (1.577 million 0.8)- I find it odd that VH1 threw the show to the wolves after three weeks and on MLK Day. It’s not a holiday that networks use to skip, but the last couple of years have been a problem for VH1 because of primetime basketball games (Sports programs are the Achilles heel to Love & Hip Hop shows because the franchise is less female skewing than all of VH1's other shows). Still, the show held up quite well. I think it passed the first test and Love & Hip Hop (New York) will return next week.
