10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/9/18 Edition

Back to full strength, but still very light on broadcast shows. It appears that the Friday shows had a better than normal showing across the board. Everything else seems to be close to their typical numbers.

1. Love & Hip Hop Miami (1.670 million 0.9)- The first two weeks of the show have gotten off to an acceptable start. It wouldn’t be fair to compare it to any of the other main shows in the franchise because all three previous shows were launched without help and all three were launched under wildly different circumstances. At some point, this is going to stand on its own (It’s my belief that it will shift to 8pm whenever New York ends. That would allow them to wait until March or April to premiere Atlanta, a normal start for that show). For now, it is doing well enough to not be a dud for VH1, but there’s a lot of time for this to create its own path and establish that it deserves to be a part of what has so far been a highly successful franchise.

2. Chicago Med (6.960 million 1.5)- This did pretty well behind a new game show. I don’t expect the numbers to remain quite this high, but if I had to pick one of the three Chicago shows to do it, it would have to be this one because it airs in the best spot that NBC has to offer.

3. The Challenge: Vendettas (888,000 0.6)- As always, MTV liked to offer a twist to an old show in a new season. This season’s change appears to perhaps be the start of a more permanent change where they have decided to select the cast from a wider range of their own shows. As far as the numbers go, it is a good start, but not very different from last season. The real success will be if the numbers manage to stay at this level.

4. Nashville (873,000 0.2)- This is a very good start to what will be the actual final season of this show. It’s going to be a long season and I do believe that CMT will run the show on a split season track again. While this wasn’t a long experiment, I do believe there were some promising signs here that this wasn’t something that completely backfired for them (It opens the door for more scripted shows for CMT and it allows more cable networks to take a harder look at canceled broadcast shows, if they can adjust the budget to make the numbers work for them. It's not a popular plan, but a handful of places have done it over the last 10 years with some success).

5. Floribama Shore (785,000 0.4)- MTV announced yesterday that they are renewing this show and it will return with a jumbo-sized, 20 episode order later this year. It’s no Jersey Shore, but it doesn’t matter since MTV is bringing that from the dead too. The numbers were okay, but I think they are hoping that it may catch fire if people watch reruns or catch it on demand before the new season gets here.

6. Chicago PD (6.780 million 1.4)- What I said about NBC and their Wednesday night lineup last month remains unchanged. They like what they have established, even if they don’t always love the ratings. This is a little bit stronger than how the show looked before the break, but I don’t expect the numbers to stay here or improve.

7. Catfish: The TV Show (591,000 0.3)- I’m having trouble saying something about these numbers. I suspect MTV may feel the same way too. The word that comes to mind for me when thinking about this show is stale. It would be unrealistic to look for different twists to perk the show up and I do believe the concept has run its course. I don’t think the network is ready to let it go and while the numbers aren’t great, they aren’t awful either. Keep in mind that MTV is looking to be aggressive this year (as part of a larger push by Viacom to reorganize and strengthen most of their headline entities. MTV and BET are part of that push, but VH1 is not). They may deal with mediocrity a little while longer, but that attitude will change if some of their plans for this year work out a little better than expected.

8. Project Runway: All Stars (858,000 0.2)- This is quite low for a season opener, at least compared to the last couple of seasons. I’m not sure that fans wanted to see a season with veterans and rookies as opposed to just having this show be for veterans. It’s possible to see improvement because that wouldn’t be atypical for the show, but there should be some nervousness here. I don’t think this is the start that Lifetime wanted to see.

9. Chicago Fire (5.958 million 1.1)- Though this returned as the lowest of the three shows, I also believe this is probably the one show of the franchise that will take the least damage. It airs on a tough night and it feels out of place. However, it is also the oldest show in the franchise and that’s why it’s here. NBC would rather go with what they know instead of taking a chance on a new show and having it fail because it wasn’t a very good fit.

10. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.490 million 0.7)- This could have come back a whole lot worse, but this show did have a very short break over the holidays. ABC has a super messy winter/spring plan this year, but they seem to just want to burn this show off on Fridays and see what the landscape looks like for them in a few months.
