10 Ratings Blurbs: 2/6/18 Edition

I anticipate the next few weeks being stuffed with filler specials and breaks as networks try their hardest to avoid as many large events as they can.

1. Super Bowl LII (103.391 million 33.4)- The numbers are down from the highs of previous years and a lot of factors could apply to the decline. Just remember that while people are arguing over a difference of 5-10 million viewers, no other show or event on any network will reach half of these numbers for the rest of the year.

2. Black Lightning (2.212 million 0.8)- The only thing The CW can ask of this show is to stay as close to The Flash as possible. So far, the show is doing exactly that. It isn’t too early to say that the show is going to be renewed for another season.

3. Black Ink Crew (1.181 million 0.6)- This is going on break for a couple of weeks (Actually, it looks like VH1 might use at least a couple of days next week to air some specials), but that isn’t odd because this is, if history is an indication, the halfway point in the season. It’s doing well so far and VH1 seems to think so because they are using it to launch a brand new show in a couple of weeks (Personally, I’m skeptical that viewers of this show would be all that interested in a show about hairstylists. Yes there are similarities like being set in New York and being centered around people who work in a shop, but that doesn’t mean it’s a match. We’ll see).

4. Supergirl (2.119 million 0.6)- We now begin the awkward part of the schedule that fans are going to hate. It’s time for another hiatus. This time, Legends of Tomorrow will fill the gap until this show returns in April. It’s not ideal, but The CW has a problem of having too many shows and not enough spaces to air them on their roster.

5. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.595 million 0.5)- I mentioned several weeks ago that this show may be sliding into that forgotten territory and how that may not be a bad thing for the show. It doesn’t generate annoying, irrelevant, weekly headlines, but that means that it’s free of Bravo’s meddling hands. It’s doing okay. The numbers aren’t going to wow anyone, but there are bigger problems elsewhere.

6. America’s Next Top Model (786,000 0.4)- Like Drag Race All Stars on Thursday, this show is in brand new territory for VH1 on Tuesdays. There is no historical precedent for what numbers are good or bad for the show. We only have the previous season’s numbers to go on (and even then, this show can’t be compared to the first 8 episodes). I still think the show is doing well and I don’t see anything in these numbers that gives me any sort of alarm.

7. Mama June: From Not to Hot (718,000 0.2)- The show seems to have found its footing this season. It’s obviously not going to end up near last season’s numbers, but they are more than acceptable for where the show airs.

8. Hell’s Kitchen (3.356 million 0.9)- Broadcast networks go for reality shows on Fridays because Friday nights are a dead zone. That doesn’t mean they don’t try scripted shows. That doesn’t mean they can’t be successful with scripted shows (they can). Sometimes, it’s easier not to overthink things and go with what’s known. This is a known entity and I don’t expect that to end anytime soon.

9. Chicago Fire (5.673 million 1.0)- The Olympic hiatus will be officially underway in a couple of days. When the schedule resumes, this show will continue to be in the tough situation of making the best out of some pretty dismal comedy lead-ins. NBC will probably give this show a pass for that this season, but NBC may be on a collision course over how they should prioritize Thursday nights (as in should they continue to strengthen their comedy block, or should they look to contend for first place at 10pm by shoring up that hour. For reference, all three 10pm broadcast shows got a 1.0 in the demo last Thursday).

10. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.220 million 0.6)- The numbers haven’t been great this season, but the show does have stable numbers on a bad night going for it. If those numbers can hold for at least another 6 weeks, it might give ABC something to think about if their spring premieres aren’t where they would like them to be.
