10 Ratings Blurbs: 10/3/17 Edition

There are still quite a few veteran shows left to return, but don't expect any of them to come back with stellar ratings. The theme seems to be that they are holding from their spring numbers and remain vulnerable to further decline.

1. Chicago Fire (7.189 million 1.5)- This show was originally supposed to remain on Tuesdays behind This Is Us. NBC changed it in the middle of the summer in favor of a new show. Because of the change, I imagine that had this stayed on Tuesdays, the premiere would have been a little higher, but these aren’t bad numbers at all. Thursdays are an uncertain night and it may be possible that we won’t know what to make of the show and its numbers until after the Winter Olympics in February.

2. Empire (7.054 million 2.4)- It’s shocking to see a show that peaked and cratered as fast as this show. The show will not be in contention to be the top broadcast show this season, but it is very likely that it will remain as FOX’s highest rated show. If the numbers continue to drop, the network might be worried, but it shouldn’t do anything to harm the show’s chances for a fifth season.

3. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (1.443 million 0.7)- These numbers are where the show has settled for at least the last season. It’s the same story with this show, the numbers aren’t tremendous, but they aren’t dreadful and it is still the highest rated show on the network.

4. Chicago PD (6.114 million 1.3)- Wednesdays are typically not the strongest night for NBC and that should continue to be the case this year. These numbers may begin to cause some alarm if the show creeps closer to (and perhaps even below) that 1.0 demo. The franchise is already down one show from last season and that means the remaining three shows aren’t impervious to being canceled.

5. Star (5.400 million 1.8)- It is my understanding that this opener was essentially a crossover with Empire. That would mean that you probably shouldn’t think that the numbers will stay this close to Empire. I’m certainly not convinced that these numbers will stay close to this level and that should be concerning.

6. How to Get Away with Murder (3.964 million 1.0)- These numbers are disappointing, but I’m not sure they are unexpected. I’ve been saying for weeks that ABC is going to struggle with their dramas and the end is certainly in sight for this show. This season will only serve to show us if the end will be this season or next season (as of today, popular belief is that the show should end next season because ABC won’t want to replace this show and Scandal on Thursday nights next year).

7. Teen Mom 2 (1.053 million 0.6)- There was a time where this show was among the highest rated cable reality shows on TV. Those days are long gone, but it continues to keep MTV afloat on Monday nights.

8. Vanderpump Rules: Jax & Brittany Take Kentucky (656,000 0.2)- The numbers have gone up a little since the move to Tuesdays, but it was an extremely short season. I’m not sure why the show would be moved other than Bravo possibly being on the fence about it. I guess they are going to stay undecided for a little while.

9. Hell’s Kitchen (3.017 million 0.9)- Any other time, these numbers would be seen as weak or forgettable because the show airs on Fridays. However, FOX made the baffling decision to renew The Exorcist, and these numbers don’t look too bad because the numbers for The Exorcist premiere are downright awful (those numbers were 1.581 million viewers with a 0.5 demo).

10. Marvel’s Inhumans (3.752 million 0.9)- I can’t remember a show in recent memory where all signs and acclaim were pointing towards this show being a flop. These numbers in no way indicate that this is a successful debut, but I want to wait at least a couple more weeks before thinking it is a dead show walking. I’ve seen worse numbers on Friday.
