The Walking Dead may be down, but when you have broadcast networks continuing to air shows with demos of 0.2-0.4 on nights not named Friday or Saturday, you can't really complain about a 5.0 demo on cable.
1. The Walking Dead (11.439 million 5.0)- I got the feeling that this wasn’t going to be another record-setting premiere. That seemed pretty evident from last season’s ratings decline. These are still astronomical numbers, but there is one thing in question. What we don’t know is if this show will retain its crown as the highest rated show on TV this year.
2. Love & Hip Hop Hollywood (2.136 million 1.1)- There wasn’t a whole lot of fluctuations in the numbers this season (the only outlier was an episode that aired on the Sunday of the VMA Awards). Depending on how the numbers of the New York version pan out, this should end the year no lower than third among all VH1 shows.
3. American Horror Story: Cult (2.065 million 1.0)- This season hasn’t taken the skid that we’ve seen in past seasons. It had that big second week decline and the numbers have held firm ever since. That’s good for the show because unlike past seasons, it had a much shorter peak to fall from.
4. Black Ink Crew: Chicago (Episode 10: 886,000 0.5; Episode 11: 1.023 million 0.5)- These are roughly the same numbers as the first half of the season. It was doing fine on Wednesdays before and it should continue to do reasonably well there.
5. Chicago P.D. (5.785 million 1.1)- Because this airs on Wednesdays within a practically veteran lineup, there’s no chatter about the shows that air there. Also, the ratings for all three shows are in close proximity with each other and it wouldn’t be fair to single out one show. The numbers are a bit low, but I don’t think NBC is sick over it yet. They have some other issues to address first.
6. How to Get Away with Murder (3.557 million 0.9)- These numbers are getting ugly, but two things can and will work in this show’s favor. The first is that 18 episode count. With the show being done by late winter, it won’t have to suffer through airing without Grey’s Anatomy or Scandal. The second thing is that ABC is once again having a dismal drama season (they have one stable show in Grey’s and one surprise freshman in The Good Doctor). ABC loves piling on new dramas in midseason and if the fall is any indication, this show may squeak out another renewal because we will have forgotten what slightly disappointing ratings look like by April.
7. Scared Famous (1.321 million 0.7)- I don’t believe VH1 is all that thrilled to see these numbers, but it’s a little too early to panic. I think they will want to see if Love & Hip Hop (New York) can improve that 8pm hour and see if this show can do anything with that. If we see a scenario where the 8pm numbers improve, but these numbers decline, we should know right away if this is a dead show walking.
8. Gotham (2.753 million 0.9)- The numbers are still low, but the positive is that it has held firm since the premiere. It also helps that this shouldn’t be impacted by the World Series, so there shouldn’t be an early, 2 week break to hurt the show.
9. Marvel’s Inhumans (1.975 million 0.4)- ABC is still trying to put on a brave face by continuing to promote this, but I’m not so positive that the show is in a good position. They destroyed a pretty stable Friday night lineup to basically hold down the fort on Sundays until American Idol gets here and the results are pretty disastrous for both nights. This show is just a placeholder for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the only hope for survival is that they just don’t want to clean house of the older, more expensive shows and replace them with even more untested rookies.
10. RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars: Exclusive Queen Ruveal (212,000 0.1)- This really isn’t an indictment on the show. It was a special that was announced about a week ahead of time and thrown on a Friday night. I do expect that when the season starts, it will mimic the flagship show and come in with a stronger showing on VH1 than it did on Logo.
