10 Ratings Blurbs: 9/26/17 Edition

No major shockers so far with the premieres and finales on this week's list.

1. America’s Got Talent (Tuesday: 14.695 million 3.0; Wednesday Finale: 15.642 million 3.0)- This show not so quietly performs better than most shows on broadcast TV. It has seen the network through some very lean years and it is astounding that NBC hasn’t tried to use the show outside of summer to stay afloat. I think it’s good that they keep this show to the summer where they can capitalize on reruns and promote their new fall offerings.

2. Big Brother (6.704 million 2.2)- CBS is generally a boring network in terms of ratings. That fact is exaggerated even more in the summer. However, this show continues to show that it is a utility player and well deserving of the 3-4 nights of real estate that it sucks up over the season. It’s a strong finish and CBS is already looking forward to a return next summer.

3. The Voice (10.570 million 2.6)- These aren’t bad numbers, but I think NBC may have hoped for a little more of a punch. They should be concerned with their new 10pm offering and the attention will be on that and not this show.

4. MasterChef (8:00: 2.745 million 1.1; 9:00 Finale: 4.145 million 1.2)- I think FOX knows that the struggle will be real for them this year and that they are going to gasp for air before Thanksgiving. That’s why I think they ordered a brand new Gordon Ramsay show last week. It ensures that they won’t have to double up on one of the other shows to fill some space on the schedule.

5. Being Mary Jane (815,000 0.3)- The numbers came up for the finale and now the show is in a bit of a precarious position. There is still some life in the show. The numbers show that. However, BET can be an enigma with their scripted shows. They have had moments where they have saved underperforming shows and canceled decent performers. With all the scripted shows on the horizon, I still have to believe that there could be room for an aging veteran to get at least one last shot at glory mostly because I don’t trust that The Breaks and Hit the Floor are going to bring their VH1 audience with them.

6. Hip Hop Squares (9:00: 1.179 million 0.6; 9:30: 1.080 million 0.5; 10:00: 955,000 0.5)- These numbers are lower than every episode except the two episodes that aired on a Wednesday night the first half of the season. That’s not a good showing and there are a lot of episodes still left to air. I don’t think VH1 will hesitate to move the show if they think that 9pm slot could be better used for another show.

7. Gotham (3.211 million 1.0)- This appears to have done no worse than just a few short months ago. I do wonder if there is a cliff coming. Most recent broadcast shows have displayed dramatic year-to-year drops and the show can’t afford to lose too many viewers from this point.

8. Real Housewives of Orange County (1.587 million 0.6)- Bravo knows that this isn’t their problem on Monday nights. They also know that they still have their heavy hitter lined up to close out the year on a high note. That’s why these numbers get lost in the shuffle or seem like they aren’t quite hitting the mark.

9. Teen Wolf (676,000 0.3)- In the beginning, this show did a lot to establish some legitimacy for MTV in the scripted game. There was always some reticence because of the image that this was just a modern remake of a cult classic, but surviving 6 seasons is nothing to sneeze at. MTV faces great uncertainty with their scripted slate. Scream will now be their most tenured scripted show and it is a show that continues to skate on extremely thin ice. What’s clear is that the network won’t stop trying. They will keep looking for a show that can replicate and surpass the success of this show.

10. So You Think You Can Dance (1.910 million 0.5)- You wonder why FOX continues to hold on to this show. There’s no real reason other than it’s a steady offering in the summer and they literally have nothing other than MasterChef available to them to help promote their fall shows (most of their other summer reality shows are throwaways). At this point, it’s obvious that the show will end when the network and producers decide it will end. I will say that the fall shows probably won’t perform too much better than this and that’s scary.
