10 Ratings Blurbs: 9/19/17 Edition

I was expecting to bring the full list back next week, but it's here early. The list this week is mostly jammed with cable finales and I took the opportunity to give some thoughts on recent cable premieres. It will be hard to squeeze those in with the broadcast season officially arriving next week.

1. Hip Hop Honors: The 90’s Game Changers (1.555 million 0.8)- This isn’t a bad showing, but this didn’t get the kind of weeks long promotional push that I’ve seen in past years. I have noticed a trend with these newer 9pm shows and specials struggling to hold on to large chunks of that Love & Hip Hop audience (The exception to the freshman slump appears to be Hip Hop Squares, which returns next week).

2. Dancing with the Stars (10.714 million 1.6)- I expect ABC to struggle this year. I don’t believe this show will be a part of the struggle and ABC doesn’t either. At least these premiere numbers show that they don’t have an impending disaster with these two hours.

3. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.582 million 0.6)- This half of the season was a bit lower rated than previous season halves, but the show is still at the top of the mountain on the network. There are still a ton of episodes left to be produced and aired, so the show will obviously return to dominate next year.

4. The Strain (995,000 0.4)- This show lived through the end of Sons of Anarchy era, it lived through the peak of the American Horror Story era, and it lived through the era where scripted shows on FX only needed to average a 0.3 demo to survive. It was never a top tier show, but it was a stable performer and networks will always appreciate shows like that.

5. Signed (779,000 0.4)- When this show began, I didn’t think the ratings were bad, but I thought it got off to a slow start. The show has grown over its short season, and because the Wednesday renewal threshold has traditionally been much lower than the Monday threshold, I would not be surprised if the show returns for a second season.

6. Little Women LA: Couples Retreat (858,000 0.3)- I will be honest and say that other than this being a Little Women spinoff, I have absolutely no idea what the show is about. That means I don’t know if the concept can sustain another season. If I have to go off numbers alone, this show does no worse than the other spinoffs and it would justify doing another season.

7. Project Runway (1.879 million 0.5)- This season has gotten off to a good ratings start. Lifetime finally seems to have figured out that less is more and that there are fans who really enjoy this show, but don’t need to have it on for most weeks of the year. It also helps that Thursdays in the summer are slow nights. With the broadcast season set to get fully underway next week, we will see if the show can hold its own on what has typically been a highly competitive night for shows looking to attract female viewers.

8. Fear the Walking Dead (1.985 million 0.7)- I think people consider this show a flop because it only get a fraction of the viewers that The Walking Dead does. People have to remember that on AMC, anything over a 0.3 demo is generally considered a success and shows that struggle to hit that mark are moved to Saturdays to either finish their runs or get once last chance to set up for a final season. This show is doing fine. The network is making their preparations for The Walking Dead to return.

9. Life of Kylie (564,000 0.3)- The show didn’t get off to a great start and the numbers have only cratered since then. Because it’s E!, don’t think these numbers automatically mean that this show is dead. However, if expectations and production costs are substantially higher than your typical reality show (and they probably were because it’s a Kardashian spinoff) don’t think that it’s a slam dunk for renewal either.

10. Vanderpump Rules: Jax & Brittany Take Kentucky (572,000 0.2)- This show is moving to Tuesday nights beginning tonight. I don’t know if it was always a part of the plan or if they just want to get the show behind some stronger performers. The show had a mediocre ratings start, but the numbers are beginning to slip into troubling territory. We will just have to see if the move helps or hurts the show going forward.
