10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/31/17 Edition

The summer season has officially begun, but we're still in the midst of the year of final season shows.

1. Dancing with the Stars (8.911 million 1.4)- One of the most understated news tidbits to come out of the upfronts is that this show is getting a Junior spinoff. I’m assuming that the junior season is probably the fill-in for the spring season (they aren’t adding a third cycle because ABC is very happy with how The Bachelor performs in the winter and there may be some schedule juggling coming in the spring to accommodate the relaunch of American Idol). ABC’s reality slate is the strongest commodity they have. They are looking to be quite ambitious with it in 2018, but there will be a danger in asking for too much to overcompensate for likely problems (aka the dramas) elsewhere.

2. The Voice (9.346 million 1.9)- For a couple years, this show had the luxury of living in a world with no comparisons to American Idol, then ABC had to get desperate and bring the show back. According to early reports, the two shows will not air against each other and this show’s spring cycle will get a slightly later start than normal, because NBC will carry the Winter Olympics, and because American Idol is only expected to air on Sundays. We have also learned that the next two cycles of The Voice will feature two former American Idol alums as judges (one for each cycle). The Broadcast reality show wars are set to return in 2018. Only ratings will determine if it is a real battle or a product of hype.

3. The Flash (3.039 million 1.1)- There was some worry a few weeks ago that the show was losing steam after hitting a couple of series lows. I think people need to remember and realize that shows are just going to lose viewers. That is the nature of the TV landscape these days. That being said, this is a great finish for the show and I expect to see this return as the top CW show in October.

4. Empire (6.943 million 2.5)- This show collapsed hard this season and Star wasn’t the breakout hit they hoped it would be. FOX decided their solution for fixing both problems would be to bump this show up to 8pm and pair it with Star next fall. It seems desperate and either the move will backfire on them, or both shows will continue to lose viewers, but still outperform 90% of the other shows on the network.

5. Braxton Family Values (918,000 0.3)- This show wasn’t as strong as the last few seasons, but it did well for WE. The network managed to find one hit show this spring, but it came in the form of a show that they probably only expected to need one season (which is why I’m guessing it hasn’t been renewed yet). This show was a solid #2 and managed to keep the off-show news and drama at a minimum. I have to believe that the show will be back. The network doesn’t have a ton of better options.

6. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (1.531 million 0.8)- Considering the fact that the series finale aired on a holiday and without any help from Love & Hip Hop Atlanta or Basketball Wives, I find it impressive that it managed to hold almost all of the viewers it drew after the first week of the season. It is a rare feat to see a non-competition style reality show reach 100 episodes. It is an even rarer feat to have that show do it on cable and in 6 seasons.

7. Arrow (1.723 million 0.6)- It’s hard to see the move to 9pm Thursdays as anything other than a demotion. It seems even more shameful seeing that it is losing its spot to Riverdale. Hear me out. The CW wanted to launch their Dynasty reboot in the fall. It would flop if they put it behind Supergirl and they are also quite shameless in admitting that they are going to drag Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to syndication as quickly as possible (meaning that it can only be paired with Jane the Virgin on Fridays). With no room on the schedule and little desire to hold a mega backlog of new shows for midseason, they bumped this to Thursdays. Could it earn an 8pm spot back? Sure, but keep in mind that there is yet another new DC show waiting in the wings for midseason and that might actually be the first show in line to get an 8pm slot should one become available (the first show in line in my opinion would be Legends of Tomorrow because it has that coveted spot behind The Flash).

8. RuPaul’s Drag Race (720,000 0.4)- This show has hit its stride. These are definitely good numbers for a Friday night before the holiday weekend.

9. Teen Mom OG (1.068 million 0.6)- Memorial Day is a tricky holiday. Some networks choose to operate as normal while other networks go into holiday mode. MTV kept a normal schedule and these aren’t bad numbers for them.

10. Veep (552,000 0.2)- This makes the list because HBO renewed the show last week. Even with the lower ratings, I didn’t feel as if the show was out of HBO’s acceptable range. Also, concessions were going to be made with no Game of Thrones anchoring the night. The show is doing as well as could be expected and HBO appears to be satisfied with that.
