10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/2/17 Edition

I had to go cable heavy on the list this week. I may have to do the same next week. It all depends on how close to the deadline that the broadcast networks wait to renew their bubble shows. Typically, all you need to know is that ABC tends to be the last network to announce their renewals and cancellations.

1. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.967 million)- The big Bravo upfront renewal dump came last week and it is not a shock that this show was renewed (Personally, the only shock to me was the renewal of Real Housewives of Dallas. Besides that, every main show and spinoff from this franchise got renewed except for the 2 shows that are still early in their runs this season—New York City and Potomac).

2. Love & Hip Hop Atlanta: Joseline’s Special Delivery (2.187 million 1.1)- I wasn’t expecting this to do as well as a new episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. Specials tend to lag behind regular episodes. Also, the NBA playoffs saw increased ratings with the start of the second round. These are decent numbers and VH1 was smart to condense this into a one-episode special rather than a much longer spinoff series.

3. Return to Amish (1.351 million 0.3)- I was drawing a complete blank on last season’s numbers. I see that the premiere is down somewhat from last season (1.634 million 0.4 demo). These aren’t bad numbers for TLC because their reality shows already tend to skew older than other networks. Anyway, this is a short season (only 6 episodes) and perhaps the network is using this season to see if there is still interest in this once robust franchise.

4. Real Housewives of New York City (1.432 million 0.5)- I’m not shocked that this wasn’t in the renewal dump. It is far too early in the season to make that call. The numbers have begun to inch up a little bit and that means there’s potential in the show getting back to where it ended last season. Even if the numbers hold here for the rest of the season, I don’t think the show is in any real danger.

5. Basketball Wives (2.013 million 0.9)- This is down massively from the premiere, but it is only down slightly from last week. It at least shows that the audience is committed and it also confirms a suspicion that Love & Hip Hop is more successful than Basketball Wives as a franchise because the former attracts quite a few more male viewers than the latter (which is why I point out when sports tends to depress the ratings of the former).

6. Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars Family Edition (749,000 0.3)- This is a ridiculously long show title. The concept also gives me thoughts of VH1’s Couples Therapy/Family Therapy shows from last year. The numbers here aren’t bad, but I’ll need to wait a few more weeks before I can tell if there’s something here.

7. Dancing with the Stars (10.311 million 1.6)- I’m trying to stay away from all of those bubble broadcast shows because just about all of their fates will be decided within the next 7-10 days. This show isn’t on the bubble. It is going to get renewed and you’re going to have to look deep in that upfronts press release to find that mention (or just skip to the part where they announce their fall schedule because there is a 0% chance that it isn’t slated to return at 8pm on Mondays beginning in mid-September).

8. Catfish: The TV Show (515,000 0.3)- The numbers have not been impressive this season. Viacom seems committed to giving MTV (and several of their other properties) a much needed boost, but we have yet to see what the plans for the network are as of yet. That makes it very difficult to know how serious they are about that commitment and if it has a possibility of being successful.

9. Riverdale (885,000 0.3)- I still believe The CW may have been a little premature with giving this show an early renewal. However, our one and only indication of how the network feels about this show will be revealed in a matter of days. If they have confidence in the show, it will return in the fall (I don’t see an 8pm spot for it unless it goes to Fridays. Otherwise, I see it behind any show that isn’t Supergirl or The Flash). If they have better prospects or their confidence in the show isn’t as high, they will hold it until midseason (or the first rookie cancellation, whichever comes first).

10. Veep (543,000 0.2)- These numbers have only fallen since the premiere. Its lead-in (Silicon Valley), returned with less than half of its audience from last season. While I mentioned that the two shows were never fully compatible, the overall glow of Game of Thrones helped both shows in a way that made HBO believe that they had two successful comedies. These numbers, while troubling, are only now beginning to skirt that uncomfortable zone. If the numbers can stabilize, or go up a little (or manages to impress the network with more forward-looking metrics such as strong streaming figures or awards consideration), HBO might be willing to gamble and keep the show around for at least another season.
