10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/25/17 Edition

You might not notice it yet, but the list is getting shorter. It will keep getting shorter and at that point, I may need to consider taking a summer break.

1. Love & Hip Hop Atlanta (2.920 million 1.5)- This has dipped under 3 million viewers a few times this season, but the numbers are holding up well so far against the NBA playoffs. It may be a harder feat to accomplish over the next couple of months. However, I think this show is strong enough to weather the storm.

2. Bad Girls Club (501,000 0.2)- Oxygen confirmed a couple of weeks ago that this is indeed the final season of the show. With only the two reunion episodes left, the show is a lock to end as the lowest rated season of the series (The current average is 415k viewers. Last season was the previous low mark at 582,000. The final two episodes would have to triple these finale numbers to overtake the season 16 average). I’ll reserve further thoughts about the show and the network in general for the next couple of weeks.

3. Bates Motel (1.410 million 0.5)- It became obvious weeks ago that this was one of those shows that wouldn’t see any sort of meaningful ratings boost for the finale. Still, its 5 season run managed to give A&E a little bit of scripted success. Now that the show is gone, the scripted bench going forward looks mighty thin (Quick research shows that they only have 1 scripted show scheduled to debut later this year).

4. Gotham (2.922 million 1.0)- This show went through a ridiculously long and strange winter hiatus. That being said, these ratings could have been worse. The long layoff means that there should be no more breaks and the show will end in June.

5. Pretty Little Liars (1.330 million 0.7)- It’s well known that this is the back half of the final season of this show. Sadly for Freeform, even with the lower numbers, it is still the highest rated show on the network by a lot. It might be time for the show to end, but it is going to be a painful goodbye.

6. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (589,000 0.2)- I have no doubt that TLC dug this up from the grave and threw this special together because they saw the success of Mama June’s show on WE. Now while these numbers are only about half of what the show had been attracting on WE, it makes you wonder if they have second thoughts about bowing to backlash and canceling this show. They are the only network in recent memory that has had off-season drama strike two of their highest rated shows and they took wildly different approaches to each one (while both situations were serious, I get the impression that the show that survived had the more direct and egregious controversy. Alas, money and the perception of social status talks).

7. The Challenge: Invasion of the Champions (794,000 0.5)- Nobody should be surprised that this is getting another season. It also isn’t surprising that they are sticking with the former champions theme for next season either. The pro athlete twist is new and new twists represent a brand new gamble for MTV.

8. Supergirl (1.795 million 0.5)- The CW’s repeat strategy this year is smart, but it is ridiculously confusing. Credit to them for not making all of their shows go on break at the same time. I can’t say I’m all that pleased with airing an episode or two and then going on a 2-3 week break. Makes me glad that I only keep up with the ratings instead of actually watching the show.

9. Better Call Saul (1.524 million 0.5)- Just filling up space here, but I still don’t think I’m looking at ratings that are a serious cause for concern. The Walking Dead (and even the ghost of Breaking Bad) cloud a lot of minds with their shows’ ratings despite AMC showing that they have a high tolerance for shows with half the numbers as this.

10. Once Upon a Time (2.691 million 0.8)- These ratings are getting painful to look at, but I still have to believe that this will get renewed. If ABC is smart, they will call next season the final season and hope they aren’t in an even worse position with their dramas next season.
