Two series finales are the main story this week.
1. The Walking Dead (11.314 million 5.4)- As long as it is recognized that this show is now beyond its peak, we can realize that this show can go on for as long as AMC wants it to go on. It is damn hard to find a show as dominant as this one. It is even harder for that show to keep its dominance for as long as this show has gone. For now, I expect next season to remain strong, but even if it were to lose 25% of its audience, it would still be the highest rated scripted show on TV.
2. Duck Dynasty (1.507 million 0.5)- There is no need for me to reflect on the history of this show since I did it a few weeks ago. It is better to look towards the future. A&E will be fine going forward and they do have a reasonably successful spinoff going with Jep & Jessica. They don’t have to make a clean break from the franchise just because the main show has ended and I don’t think they will. I can see a scenario where remnants of this show lives on with random specials.
3. Grimm (4.327 million 0.9)- I remember that the year this show premiered, it was widely expected to be one of the first cancellations of the season (even with its late October premiere, strangely enough). It was a surprise hit and NBC was in such dire straits that they almost killed the show by moving it to shore up Tuesday nights. Luckily, they came to their senses. It was never a major hit show, but it did give NBC some legitimacy on Friday nights and showed other networks that it didn’t necessarily have to be the night where old shows go to die. They are going to miss this show next season because they have yet to find another show to recreate that same modest magic.
4. Real Housewives of Potomac (1.596 million 0.6)- I’m a little concerned with these numbers. As raw numbers, they are decent and on par with the New York and New Jersey franchises. Because of where it aired, I’m not convinced these are good numbers because now I have to wonder how far the numbers will fall when it doesn’t have help from Real Housewives of Atlanta anymore.
5. The Flash (2.388 million 0.9)- This is a series low in the demo. That should not be a huge surprise this time of year. It is spring and The CW will have to start skipping a couple of weeks to make a final push to the finale next month.
6. Catfish: The TV Show (654,000 0.4)- I knew those premiere numbers a few weeks ago were a little deceptive. These numbers aren’t horrible though. I think that as long as the show keeps these viewers, the numbers will be acceptable.
7. Chicago Justice (5.905 million 0.9)- Look no further than the #10 show on this list to know why I no longer think these numbers are a sign that this one show is in danger.
8. Ridiculousness (443,000 0.2)- MTV stopped doing 40 minute episodes and reduced the show to one new episode per week. The numbers have fallen off a little since then. It airs on Friday nights and while MTV has managed to put together a pretty good year so far, I don’t look at this show as a problem because of the numbers.
9. The Breaks (1.022 million 0.5)- I am starting to get the feeling that this show may not survive beyond this freshman season. It would be unfortunate, but consider these things. VH1 decided early on that this would not air behind Love & Hip Hop Atlanta (something that they have done for Single Ladies and Hit the Floor because it is the best lead-in they can offer). They have decided to burn through 10 episodes of Hip Hop Squares in a span of 4 weeks to sit in that plum 9pm timeslot. In 2 weeks, Basketball Wives LA will return to air in that same 9pm timeslot. Those things would make it seem like this show got a raw deal, but this show needed to average about 500k more viewers to make that argument valid.
10. Chicago Med (6.014 million 0.9)- With numbers like this, it’s hard to imagine that NBC will fault Chicago Justice for getting similar numbers. These numbers are crossing into ugly territory and NBC better hope that this is just evidence of a late-season burnout rather than the first sign of a larger problem. If it’s a larger problem, this isn’t the only show that would go into next season showing some major weakness for NBC at a time where it is believed that their problems only rest with their comedies.
