This is a very active time of year. The broadcast shows are winding down while the cable networks are beginning to make their moves to set themselves up for a big summer push.
1. Basketball Wives (2.614 million 1.3)- So first, VH1 has officially dropped the LA part from the name this season seeing as they have practically merged the Miami and Los Angeles casts. Also, both versions are technically at season 6 anyway so it’s probably easier to just call it season 6 of Basketball Wives (Miami never had the Miami part attached to the name). Also, because it is airing behind Love & Hip Hop Atlanta and not on its own night as the 8pm show, there is no way that this season will average lower ratings than the previous seasons of Miami or LA. The people at VH1 have essentially cheated themselves into believing that they rejuvenated the show when all they did was give it the best timeslot they could offer.
2. Teen Mom OG (1.197 million 0.7)- While these aren’t bad numbers, they do look a little low to be a premiere for a Teen Mom show.
3. Scandal (5.261 million 1.3)- This show finally hit that somewhat mythical 100 episode mark. The ratings aren’t anything to write home about, but I can’t think of a show that had a weirder run to that mark. It barely survived its first season after very long odds (ABC shows that premiere in the spring didn’t and still don’t have a great resume for success) and mediocre ratings (a 2.0 demo was mediocre then. Networks are desperate for that these days). It absolutely exploded halfway into season 2 and it became ABC’s flagship show. Weird (and sometimes inconvenient) hiatuses have forced ABC to make do and now, it is no longer the top show on the network. However, ABC’s drama situation is so bad that while you may start hearing about final season talk next year, it might be unrealistic for the network to allow the show to end in the next couple of years.
4. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (Premiere: 2.412 million 1.2, Episode 2: 2.364 million 1.1)- This is yet another previously announced show that will air its final season this year. To my knowledge, there are only 6 episodes this season and if VH1 keeps airing 2 episodes per week, that means the finale is just 2 weeks away.
5. Little Women: Dallas (835,000 0.3)- This show is still pretty new and it hasn’t found an audience just yet. The numbers are not far off from how the current cycles of LA and Atlanta are performing, but both of those shows have seen lower numbers than normal this spring. Lifetime needs to be careful here. They could burn out the franchise much faster than they intended to do it.
6. Dancing with the Stars (11.183 million 1.8)- This show is just there, that’s why I don’t talk about it. But with all junk going on with ABC, expect this to get renewed in a couple of weeks. What will be interesting to watch is if that demo manages to beat The Voice over the next few weeks because it is certainly in play (It is already beating The Voice in viewers and live episodes of The Voice tend to see lower ratings compared to those early casting rounds).
7. Veep (659,000 0.3)- This is a bit low for the premiere, but we have to remember that for the past few seasons, this show premiered after Silicon Valley (which aired after Game of Thrones). Game of Thrones won’t be back until after this season is over, but Silicon Valley will be back next week and while the two shows weren’t perfectly compatible, any hold of those ratings should bring the ratings of this show up a couple hundred thousand viewers.
8. RuPaul’s Drag Race (588,000 0.3)- The bad news here is that ratings have dropped every week since the premiere. The good news is that these numbers still outpace whatever it would have done on Logo. For that reason, VH1 has already decided to renew the show for another season (Also among the renewals are Black Ink Crew: Chicago, Love & Hip Hop Hollywood, America’s Next Top Model, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, Hip Hop Squares and Shaunie’s Home Court).
9. 2 Broke Girls (4.570 million 1.0)- On the surface, this show looks like it’s in the same boat as Elementary. It is a veteran show with not great ratings, it has never been considered a hit, but it is possibly a lucrative syndication asset. CBS has another couple of weeks to mull over the show and it is going to be all about seeing if the money works for them.
10. Switched at Birth (490,000 0.2)- The last 2 seasons of the show might make people forget that this was a much stronger show in the past. It didn’t have the viewership of Pretty Little Liars and it didn’t have the critical acclaim of The Fosters. What the show had was a steady, loyal audience and it allowed the network (ABC Family when it premiered, but Freeform at present) to at least give the appearance of having a diverse roster of shows.
