10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/9/17 Edition

The list features yet another series finale and a bunch of random cable shows. Next week's list promises to be much more broadcast heavy as the fate of all of those undecided broadcast shows will finally be settled.

1. Real Housewives of Atlanta (3.148 million 1.3)- Bravo took a gamble on the 4 part reunion thing. I wouldn’t call it a massive success, but it wasn’t a catastrophic failure either. I suppose, if they pick and choose their moments, it can work. I wouldn’t suggest doing it for every show.

2. Dear Mama: A Tribute to Honor Moms (1.299 million 0.6)- This is up from the first outing last year. Keep in mind that last year’s special actually aired on Mother’s Day, so that was actually a surprisingly good result for VH1. There is obviously interest in doing a special like this every year, but they may have botched this year’s ratings potential by having Love & Hip Hop Atlanta come off a two week break and airing Basketball Wives for two nights in a row.

3. MTV Movie and TV Awards (1.177 million 0.6)- This awards show is never as big as the VMA’s. That may also be why they keep trying to tweak it. All things considered, they may have been expecting better, but this could have gone so much worse.

4. Better Call Saul (1.736 million 0.7)- I wasn’t anticipating putting this back on the list so soon, but I needed filler shows and this show actually managed to see higher ratings on a night where many shows were down. This show has gotten positive reviews by former fans of Breaking Bad who appear to be pleased that this season has featured several characters from the original series. If that is the reason for the increase, the show may not be done with bringing more of those nostalgic Breaking Bad fans into the fold.

5. Black Ink Crew (1.148 million 0.6)- I said early in the season that by virtue of the show airing on Wednesday, the overall numbers were going to be down from last season. That certainly proved to be the case. The show did manage to attract a steady audience for 5 months. That isn’t always easy to do. There are rumors floating around that VH1 wants to expand the franchise (The upfront schedule didn’t introduce a new addition to the franchise, but it did announce the renewal of Black Ink Crew: Chicago). It doesn’t look like a bad idea now that they have 2 reasonably successful shows and this show has managed to carve out a night to house the franchise.

6. Chicago Fire (6.081 million 1.2)- Though it is late in the season, it’s good to see all four shows of the franchise airing in the same week. NBC and the other broadcast networks will announce their renewals and cancellations anytime between now and Friday evening. At this point, seeing all four shows with similar ratings can either be assuring or troubling. NBC will have to do some work over the summer to make sure they are carrying a solid franchise into next season. I don’t think the network wants to see these shows returning next fall with low 1’s in the demo.

7. Basketball Wives (Sunday: 658,000 0.3; Monday: 1.899 million 0.9)- The only explanation I have for the Sunday airing is that VH1 was also airing the MTV Movie and TV awards (following suit with the other Viacom networks). I think the move, while not successful, was better than their likely option of damaging Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. If one show had to get hurt from the move, this show would be it. It managed to rebound for Monday, but it suffered a little by a much lower return for Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. For the record, VH1 only ended up getting around 300k viewers for their telecast of the awards (BET, Spike, and TVLand also got around 300k each for the awards. Comedy Central was around 230k).

8. Pretty Little Liars (856,000 0.4)- I’m not going to go as far to say that the premiere was basically the high water mark for ratings for this last half-season, but these declining numbers are making me believe that this show probably won’t see a ratings explosion for the series finale. Sadly, these numbers are still doing better than everything else on the network and Freeform is going to be in a situation where they are going to have to pin their immediate future on keeping their aging comedies around as long as possible.

9. RuPaul’s Drag Race (694,000 0.3)- As we get deeper into the season, it appears that the only loser in this situation is the Logo network. You have to remember that they gave away their highest rated show. Meanwhile, this show has practically doubled its Logo numbers and VH1 has a legitimately successful Friday show (something they have tried to attain for a couple of years now). There are rumblings that Viacom wants to reorganize and prioritize their networks. While nether network falls under the primary priority umbrella (the high priority networks are MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and the soon to be Paramount Network—currently known as Spike), Viacom is in an awkward position because VH1 has quite a few more moderate to highly rated shows than most of the networks that are in that high priority tier and Logo’s future viability may depend on how valuable their shows are to VH1.

10. Bad Girls Club: East Meets West (377,000 0.2)- This is a show that spent much of its 17 season run being Oxygen’s highest rated show. Even with that knowledge, Oxygen has tried for several years to divorce themselves from the show. The opportunity finally presented itself this season when they announced that they were going forward with a full rebrand of the network to focus on more crime based shows. Declining ratings from this show made the decision easier to swallow. The network struggled to gain relevance with this show, and they will continue to struggle without it. Because of the ratings of the last several seasons, I don’t see another network trying to save or revive the show, but don’t be surprised if other networks continue to try to take elements from this concept (a concept that itself was derived from MTV’s Real World, which I should add, is also produced by the same company as this show) to make their own shows.
