10 Ratings Blurbs: 9/27/16 Edition

This hasn't been a promising start for returning shows so far.

1. Empire (10.868 million 4.2)- You’re going to see a trend here with returning shows coming back with numbers close to their spring levels. This is a little above those spring numbers, but it is way below last season’s premiere.

2. Chicago PD (6.874 million 1.6)- This is a decent start, but I have to remember this is a Wednesday show. These numbers will certainly come down a little.

3. Big Brother (6.320 million 2.0)- This is good finish. We know the show will be back next summer. It looks like CBS won’t need to throw in any major tweaks to generate interest.

4. Hell’s Kitchen (3.374 million 1.1)- This is a little low, but we’ve seen worse for Friday shows. I think the show will be fine if the numbers hold. I do worry that FOX may swap this out with a lower performing show on better night in a couple of weeks (right now, the leading candidate seems to be Rosewood on Thursdays).

5. Chicago Med (7.022 million 1.4)- I didn’t feel as if this were the right spinoff to go to Thursdays. The show is just a little too young in my opinion. I thought Chicago Fire was better equipped to handle the move, but maybe NBC wants to use that show (during The Voice hiatus) to help the new spinoff.

6. Once Upon a Time (3.985 million 1.3)- These numbers seem troubling. ABC needs some serious momentum on Sundays and this show isn’t providing it to the two shows following it. It certainly isn’t at the front of the line to get canceled, but I would not be surprised if ABC starts tinkering with the lineup before November sweeps.

7. How to Get Away with Murder (5.133 million 1.4)- ABC seriously had no clue that a lack of Scandal in the fall would hurt their best night this bad. The easy fix seems to be to swap this with Notorious, but this show was showing some cracks last season. It’s a little worrying because while the show is in its third season, the low episode count means the syndication safety net may not apply here.

8. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (3.439 million 1.1)- This is the season where things stop being guaranteed for this show. For now, it looks safe only because the 10pm Tuesday slot has been a major headache for ABC over several years and this show looks to have improved on it so far.

9. Scream Queens (2.165 million 1.0)- This is a show that FOX shouldn’t have renewed. It’s also one of several sophomore shows across all of the broadcast networks that will need miracles or some very slick financial deals working in their favor to get renewed again.

10. Bad Girls Club: Social Disruption (524,000 0.3)- A new season brings the same old song. The premiere numbers are down from last season and this still looks to be Oxygen’s highest rated show. Hard to fathom when you see numbers this low.
