10 Ratings Blurbs: 9/13/16 Edition

The fall television season officially begins next Monday. A lot of networks are going aggressive by starting their new seasons this week.

1. The Haves and the Have Nots (3.235 million 0.9)- OWN has been smart about how they have executed this half of the season. They knew they were launching two highly anticipated scripted shows and they have used a couple episodes this season to get the eyeballs on them. The experiment was certainly a success with Greenleaf and early indications are that it may be successful for Queen Sugar as well. What’s even more impressive is that this is still clearly the highest rated show on the network and the rookies still have some work to do to catch up. It’s a good situation for a network to be in, especially when the bulk of their original programming is scripted.

2. Dancing with the Stars (12.185 million 2.1)- This is a pretty good start because I expect these numbers to shrink with the increased competition next week. If the decline is normal, the show should be around where it was last season.

3. Rob & Chyna (2.042 million 1.1)- I am hoping E! wasn’t expecting more from this show because there’s nothing to be disappointed about here. These are good numbers. Now, the challenge will be holding on to the people who tuned in.

4. Little Women LA (1.642 million 0.6)- Lifetime put out a press release last week saying these were series high numbers. I’m inclined to believe that only because numbers in the entire franchise have hit 1.6 million a handful of times.

5. Dance Moms (Premiere: 961,000 0.4; Special: 671,000 0.2)- I just figured out that this wave of episodes is just an extension of season 6. I wasn’t aware the show was returning, but it looks like the fans were ready. The numbers (at least for the regular episode and not the special) seem normal to me.

6. Jim & Chrissy: Vow or Never (441,000 0.2)- A roughly 40k viewer increase from week 1 is something. It’s not an impressive feat, but it signals that the show may not be DOA. I think I would still need to see more progress before I would put the show in the bubble zone. I say that because a show like this has the concept to be a one-season show if it has mediocre numbers, but decent numbers would certainly extend the life of the show.

7. Basketball Wives LA (1.517 million 0.7)- This rebounded nicely after the two week break. In fact, this is a season high for the show. Not too bad being out there on an island by itself.

8. Real Housewives of Melbourne (445,000 0.1)- I don’t know what’s up with these cable networks shuffling around shows so randomly this summer. The numbers haven’t been great and they haven’t had a chance to stabilize. Hopefully, Bravo stops moving the show around and Thursday becomes the permanent home once again.

9. Masters of Sex (518,000 0.1)- We all know by now that this will never be a show that gets blockbuster ratings. Showtime keeps it around for the critical acclaim. The show is just about at the stage where it will likely end when the people working on the show are ready for it to end.

10. So You Think You Can Dance (2.266 million 0.7)- FOX waited a long time last year before they finally decided to bring the show back. I’m guessing they will take a long time again.
