Quite a few interesting ratings tidbits make up for the small selection of premieres and finales this week.
1. America’s Got Talent (Tuesday: 11.567 million 2.5; Wednesday: 9.390 million 1.8)- No one should be surprised that NBC renewed the show for season 12. They wish they could get numbers like these in-season for something other than The Voice.
2. Real Housewives of NYC (1.792 million 0.6)- I’m actually impressed with the comeback this season has put together. I don’t know what has changed, but whatever it is, Bravo needs to keep that together because it’s working. I hope the Olympic break this week doesn’t derail progress going into the final stretch of the season.
3. Love & Hip Hop Atlanta (2.461 million 1.2)- This is the first season in the entire series that has averaged under 3 million viewers. In fact, not one episode this season hit the 3 million viewer mark. With the season now over, there is a real possibility that its streak of 4 straight years of being VH1’s top show could end. If Love & Hip Hop Hollywood returns with a small ratings improvement from last season, it will be poised to edge this show out to become the top show on the network (Love & Hip Hop New York would also be in the mix for #1 if it debuts a new season this year and maintains its previous season average).
4. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (1.157 million 0.5)- There were some cracks in the foundation before the summer competition got underway. Now that the show has more direct completion, the numbers have not been impressive. I’m not sensing any danger here, but I think E! will become more pragmatic in their scheduling and try to avoid stretches where other networks are programming female targeted shows on Sundays (sans the unavoidable juggernauts in NFL Football, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead).
5. Pretty Little Liars (1.101 million 0.5)- It’s hard to keep a show fresh and engaging after airing for so long with a limited concept. It’s obvious that the die-hard fans are committed to sticking around until the end because even with these numbers, the show still has the best ratings on the network.
6. Little Women: Atlanta (1.308 million 0.5)- I’m not seeing anything unusual about these numbers. They are a tiny bit lower than the episodes that aired earlier this year, but they are in the normal range of numbers that the shows from this franchise manage to attract.
7. Basketball Wives LA (1.129 million 0.6)- I can agree that the show should have aired at 8pm instead of 9pm all along. The 9pm Sunday hour has been notoriously rough for a lot of shows and a mediocre show will not be able to stand its ground there. However, there is evidence that while 9pm produced slightly lower ratings, the 8pm numbers are signaling that there isn’t much growth to be had with the show. These numbers are very good for a non-Monday VH1 show, but will age catch up to it? These are questions that have to be asked once you get to season 5 of a VH1 reality show.
8. The Challenge: Rivals III (Finale: 718,000 0.4; Reunion: 550,000 0.3)- This has been somewhat of a lukewarm season in terms of ratings. I don’t think the show has done anything to hurt its chances to earn another season.
9. Devious Maids (859,000 0.3)- I think fans should be a little concerned about this show. My personal opinion is that I only see 2 scenarios for this show. Either the show will be canceled because the ratings do justify cancellation, or it will be renewed with the understanding that next season will be the final season. Lifetime has been known to make some shocking decisions with their scripted shows, good and bad, so nothing is guaranteed.
10. Ridiculousness (10:00: 590,000 0.3; 10:30: 608,000 0.3)- I think MTV took a very bold move to shift this show to Fridays while promoting their marginally successful MTV2 programs to the main channel. The jury is still out on the new Thursday lineup, but if these numbers hold, it will certainly usher in a massive improvement for MTV on Friday nights.
