10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/24/16 Edition

This is it, the last 2 days of the broadcast television season are upon us. Luckily for me, that means I get one more week of not trying to reach for shows to fill the blurb list.

1. Empire (10.880 million 4.1)- We have seen shows peak in their first season. That is common among a lot of broadcast shows. No one has ever seen a show have a first season peak like this one. That reason alone makes these ratings seem disappointing, but this is an exceptionally strong finish to a sophomore season.

2. Gotham (3.618 million 1.2)- The ratings aren’t notable, but they proved to be better than a lot of shows FOX ended up renewing this season. I’m a little nervous about viewer attrition next season, but next season is season 3 and it appears to be a full season at that. The show will be safe because it now needs a fourth season for syndication.

3. The Originals (847,000 0.3)- The CW shocked quite a few people by leaving this show off the fall schedule. The ratings support the move, but I don’t think that trying to launch a new show after The Vampire Diaries, a show notorious for not helping shows even in its days of being the top show, on a Friday is a good omen. I won’t be surprised if this somehow manages to sneak back on before January.

4. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (3.026 million 1.0)- This show will be moving to 10pm next season. It was a little bit of an expected move, but I’m not sure it’s a good move. 10pm Tuesdays has been a wasteland for shows and this show doesn’t have great numbers. If the ratings hold, (unlikely because shows do lose viewers over time) there will be some room for this show to improve on the timeslot and keep ABC happy. However, next season is season 4 meaning that its safety will not be guaranteed beyond next year.

5. Braxton Family Values (843,000 0.4)- This is a lukewarm premiere. The network has struggled this year, so this has turned out to be one of the better showings. Maybe viewers will come around to the show now that viewers have limited options for Thursdays.

6. Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn (621,000 0.3)- I don’t think the numbers were terrible for this show. It’s difficult to tell how much of the interest was driven by cast selection. I guess the only way to find out is to do another season. The ratings certainly warrant another chance and I think they should be able to find 10 willing participants.

7. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (1.850 million 0.7)- I have a feeling that of the now 4 headline DC shows, this one is going to make The CW the most uncomfortable next year. This show cannot afford to lose 0.2-0.3 demo points off of its average next season. There are far too many shows and the field is stronger than ever before.

8. Bad Girls Club: Twisted Sisters (608,000 0.3)- This season is currently the lowest rated season of the entire series. The reunion episodes could pull the average up enough to surpass season 1 (the next lowest rated season), but it won’t be enough to move ahead of last season’s average.

9. Kendra on Top (9:00: 381,000 0.2; 9:30: 405,000 0.2)- This show has seen ratings declines for 2 straight seasons now. I think there are three main reasons that make the case for keeping the show alive. Reason 1: It airs on Fridays meaning the expectation to do well is much lower than the Thursday shows. Reason 2: Every Friday show except Marriage Boot Camp does worse than this. Reason 3: They already air way too many seasons of Marriage Boot Camp each year and something has to fill the break between seasons.

10. Match Made in Heaven (490,000 0.2)- I made a comment about flops being the new hits last week. I wasn’t referring to this show, but it applies here. This was a show that absolutely cheated death last season (it started in primetime, was moved to 11pm after 2 or 3 weeks and then the finale episode aired at 7pm). Now miraculously, it not only got a second season, it was also placed behind the best lead-in the network has to offer. I don’t think slightly better than 50% retention is good enough to make that second chance look like a smart decision.
