10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/22/16 Edition

A lot of shows had a rough week. For some, it means absolutely nothing. For others, it could be a sign of a grim future.

1. Dancing with the Stars (12.458 million 1.8)- This isn’t the strongest start, but ABC will take it. It really looks like their reality shows have managed to fill a lot of holes and post some decent ratings. Without them and the Wednesday comedies, this network would look so much worse than it does now.

2. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.852 million 0.8)- These aren’t the best numbers I have seen from this show but they are still pretty good. It is one of the few shows on the list this week that didn’t have a bad week.

3. Pretty Little Liars (1.186 million 0.6)- This is by far the weakest finale (including midseason finales) of the entire series. The show now appears to be on the decline. While the show will be back and it is still the top show on Freeform, there needs to be a serious plan put in place to end the show with some dignity. It would be a shame to let a show like this crash and burn because the network doesn’t have better options to turn to.

4. How to Get Away with Murder (5.293 million 1.4)- Fans of this show who also keep up with the ratings have felt quite uneasy since the return from winter break. We know the show will be back next season, but one can only guess what the ratings will look like and what that means for the future of this show. The 4th season syndication rule won’t apply here because the show will only have 45 episodes after the end of next season (A fourth season that will take a show's episode count to 88 would be ideal but situational concessions can be made if the show can at least get to 70 episodes. For this show, it would take 5 seasons to get to 70 episodes and 6 to get to 88 if they continue to produce 15 episode seasons).

5. Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn (621,000 0.3)- If I were to compare these numbers to Couples Therapy, I would have to be careful with how I did that. The seasons that were helped by Mob Wives, all of season 4 and most of season 5, did better than this. The seasons without that assistance did worse than this. Mob Wives helped this episode, but that goes away forever beginning tomorrow. If this show can manage not to lose more than 125,000 viewers, the show will stay in Couples Therapy territory. If it loses substantially more than that, this show will be in serious danger going forward.

6. Nashville (4.220 million 0.9)- This was one of the few veteran shows that wasn’t part of the ABC renewal wave a couple weeks ago. One would assume that it means the show is doomed. I say not so fast. ABC has had a horrible month of March that has seen almost all of its veterans return with lower numbers and has already claimed a midseason freshman victim in Of Kings and Prophets. With one more freshman show due to premiere this week, ABC looks to be on a trajectory of potentially going 1 for 6 with rookie dramas this season. That means this show could be in position to squeak out any kind of renewal just because there will be major holes to fill and there may not be enough viable pilots in the pipeline to fill them.

7. The Americans (1.113 million 0.3)- This is down from last season’s premiere but about even with that inexplicable drop it took after last season’s premiere. It’s hard to know what the drama territory at FX looks like these days, but I do know it is way off from how The People vs. OJ Simpson is performing. These numbers aren’t that great and its future will not be promising if the ratings drop from here.

8. Awkward (517,000 0.3)- These ratings are not good and there’s no getting around that. The only bright spot here is that this is the final batch of episodes for the series and at least the fans still holding on will get to see how the show ends.

9. Real World: Go Big or Go Home (551,000 0.3)- These ratings are pretty terrible, but I’m thinking it’s because Thursdays don’t suit this show very well. I seem to remember that the last Thursday season didn’t fare too well. This show needs to be on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and I’m not sure fans are too intrigued by this season’s theme either.

10. Bad Girls Club: Twisted Sisters (575,000 0.3)- You would think this premiere couldn’t possibly do worse than last season’s premiere, but it did. You would also think that this couldn’t possibly still be Oxygen’s highest rated show, but it is.
