10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/31/15 Edition

It wasn't very hard filling up this list this week. There were a few premieres but many more finales.

1. The Walking Dead (15.784 million 8.2)- These aren’t series high numbers but they are pretty close so perhaps the growth streak may be over. That doesn’t mean one should lose sight on the fact that these numbers still destroy just about everything on TV. For now, networks are just glad they don’t have to play timid on Sundays until October.

2. The Haves and the Have Nots (3.503 million 1.1)- I have every reason to believe this show will be back sometime before the end of the year. There were a lot of extra episodes ordered and this is the highest rated show on the network. While none of the other shows come close to this one in terms of ratings, I can appreciate how the show isn’t being burned out because it’s doing better than everything else.

3. Love & Hip Hop (2.130 million 1.2)- This took a step back for the finale and I don’t believe the first part of the reunion show will perform much better next week (Next week is the NCAA Basketball Championship game). That being said, this show broke a curse of sorts. The odd numbered seasons of this show tend to perform remarkably worse than the even numbered seasons. This season wasn’t too far off from season 4 and the overall average is still just above 2.5 million viewers (making it second among 2014 premieres on VH1). It was a good season for the show.

4. The Challenge (Finale: 1.033 million 0.7; Reunion: 732,000 0.4)- The season had a little bit of a rocky start but it managed to put together a decent run. The ratings for this season won’t go down as memorable or great but they didn’t show major viewer attrition. That is a positive feature for a show that has run as long as this one has.

5. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.833 million 0.8)- Bravo may have had pretty high hopes when the show first started and those high hopes never really panned out, but this show has become a decent pillar. It doesn’t come with the high ratings of Real Housewives of Atlanta but it doesn’t come with the problems that the other franchise cities come with either. It is a successful show in its own right.

6. Pretty Little Liars (2.645 million 1.3)- The ratings for this show are like a broken record. The premieres and finales do well and every episode in between slumps from this level but experiences very little fluctuation from where it settles. For a person who watches ratings, this does tend to get very boring but it isn’t boring to ABC Family. To know what you are getting out of a show when you’re going through a rough patch trying to find new shows is a very reassuring thing.

7. Blood, Sweat and Heels (1.320 million 0.6)- This never brought in huge numbers last season so I’m hesitant to say that this low retention from RHOA is all from this airing against The Walking Dead finale. I think I want to see some more numbers especially in the next several weeks. The show is at a critical junction because shows behind Real Housewives shows tend to get no more than 2 seasons of that lead-in before they are sent to fend for themselves in season 3. What I’ve seen from season 1 tells me this show isn’t strong enough to have that happen so I want to see if season 2 can make some significant strides.

8. Hot GRITS (143,000 0.1)- This is a pretty bad start for the show and I think I’m a little surprised the numbers are this low but I wasn’t expecting far better results (maybe 100k more viewers). The sad thing is this was actually the highest rated of the three new Wednesday offerings for VH1 and I’m sure that has to hurt. These numbers are bad and reruns of movies would do better than this.

9. The Mindy Project (2.05 million 0.9)- These are some sad numbers. They have been sad all year so that part isn’t some kind of new fact. This show got dragged to 3 full seasons and now it is time to cash in. I’m sure FOX doesn’t want to renew this but they have to at this point. This show is far too close to syndication to cancel it and they will have room on the schedule for it. At this point most are expecting a renewal/final season announcement with a move to Fridays for next season. Anything different will be a shock.

10. Barely Famous (65,000 0.0)- No your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Yes I had this on the list last week and yes this episode pulled less than 100,000 viewers with a goose egg in the demo. These have to be the lowest primetime ratings I’ve ever seen for a VH1 show. These numbers are awful and the show can’t be long for this world. I want to say that a move or a burnoff is imminent but the 2 shows that air in front of it don’t have significantly better ratings and I don’t think VH1 wants to suffer through the embarrassment that comes from admitting that all three shows are massive failures from the outset. If this ends up being the scapegoat, just know that was taking the easy way out.
