10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/17/15 Edition

This is partially by circumstance and partially intentional but 7 of the 10 shows on this list feature shows that have gotten below a million viewers this past week.

1. Dancing with the Stars (14.16 million 2.1)- This doesn’t really look that good for a premiere in the grand scheme of things. I know the broadcast networks are really running on fumes because I’ve seen some downright horrific ratings but this could have done a little better. Now the pressure is on to try not to drop more than 0.5 in the demo over the rest of the season before the criticism and cancellation calls begin.

2. Hindsight (249,000 0.2)- In the 5 plus years that I have been compiling ratings for VH1 shows, this has to be the lowest rated show by far that they have actually renewed. To be honest I’m not that surprised. VH1 is not happy with these numbers. If they were, they would have tried to spin them like they do in other renewal press releases. No this show got renewed because it is a scripted show and they may try to spend the year trying to see numbers from DVD sales or cut some kind of exclusive streaming deal with Amazon or Netflix (if they haven’t done it already). The money made from those outside outlets may be the primary factor of if the show lives beyond season 2. A reality show with these numbers doesn’t have that same sort of potential value and they are cheaper to replace.

3. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2.547 million 1.2)- This is a little bit on the high side for a Kardashian premiere. I’m sure E! wanted that but only to help out their scripted show The Royals (which got a little help but could have done better). The story remains the same with this show. The network is stuck with it until they can find a long-term, viable replacement for it.

4. Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars (676,000 0.3)- Last week WE renewed this show. That in itself isn’t a surprise. It is a Friday show and I suspect these numbers were slightly better than the non-reality star seasons of the show. Having the show return in 2 months is a little dangerous in my opinion. It’s clear these numbers are way down from last season so the potential for burning the show out is very real.

5. Real World: Skeletons (970,000 0.6)- I honestly had no idea that this episode was the finale. MTV could really be on the fence with this show. The ratings weren’t stellar but they weren’t awful either. They have also been trying to drag this show out to 30 seasons for years and now that they have done it, I’m not sure they know what to do next.

6. Switched at Birth (1.062 million 0.4)- Not much has gone well for ABC Family over the past several months. All of their new and existing shows except Pretty Little Liars has collapsed. This show is no exception. The second half of this season will return soon (summer I guess) and some decisions will need to be made about whether to keep going and stall for time to find a promising newcomer.

7. Preachers of Detroit (421,000 0.2)- These numbers are climbing ever so slowly. Oxygen’s standards have been so low that they have shown they will renew a show pulling 500,000 viewers. As you see it still misses that mark but it is a Friday show and to my knowledge there are only 1 or 2 other original shows on at the moment. There’s a chance this show may be slightly exceeding expectations at the moment.

8. R&B Divas: LA (234,000 0.1)- To my knowledge this is quite a few episodes into the season. Having seen numbers for Hollywood Divas, it may be safe to say that numbers like these are typical for TVOne shows and there may not be cause for concern unless the network was hoping that these shows would finally put them on the map.

9. Match Made In Heaven (545,000 0.2)- I suspect this is actually a season high for the show and I think it is happening that way because the show is actually behind the current highest rated show on the network (Mary Mary...though Braxton Family Values is the overall highest rated show on the network). Dating shows are always a landmine. If the show is a hit then either the lead has to be replaced or the network runs the risk of exposing the show as fake. This show isn’t a hit and one okay week isn’t going to save it just yet.

10. Sex Box (366,000 0.2)- I’m not sure what WE expects from this show. It hasn’t been doing all that well behind Marriage Boot Camp and now that show is over so it will be left to fend for itself on Fridays. If the ratings fall then it is definitely getting canceled. If the numbers hold then perhaps there’s a small case for renewal but as it stands the numbers aren’t that great, even for Friday nights.
