10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/3/15 Edition

I think I did well for myself this week. There were a lot of premieres, finales and renewal news around to keep from from having to talk about The Walking Dead.

1. How to Get Away with Murder (8.99 million 2.8)- This didn’t do too bad without the Scandal lead-in so the show does have its own audience. I don’t see ABC making any radical moves for next season but the most important thing to pay attention to will be if the max number of episodes will be capped at 15 again.

2. The Haves and the Have Nots (3.284 million 1.0)- OWN extended the episode orders of all 4 of their scripted series on Friday. This show got the most with 23 extra episodes and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. The ratings are fantastic and the other three shows with extended orders don’t get half of these numbers to still be considered a success.

3. Catfish: The TV Show (1.406 million 0.8)- This is a little low for a premiere for this show. Unfortunately that doesn’t excuse the fact that this is the highest rated premiere for an MTV series so far this year. MTV needs to be very nervous if these numbers don’t hold through the rest of the season because they do not have much on the returning bench to really depend on in the foreseeable future.

4. Masterchef Junior (4.83 million 1.6)- Now that this is over for the year I have no doubt it will be back in some capacity, likely 2 seasons, starting in the fall. This show kept Tuesday nights afloat for FOX.

5. The Challenge (755,000 0.5)- MTV renewed this show late last week and I find something a little surprising about it. This show was renewed not with Real World but with Are You the One (Since the show now has former Real World and Are You the One alums on it). The numbers aren’t as strong as last season but I suspect it is because of the 11pm timeslot and because two of this current season’s castmembers are now deceased. This show does go through cycles of up and down seasons so I don’t think MTV is kicking themselves over lower ratings.

6. Real Housewives of Atlanta (3.737 million 1.3)- Sundays in February are murder for just about any show. Bravo skipped 2 of those 4 weeks and saw lower than average numbers for the 2 weeks they did not skip. March is much more forgiving so far. Now there is a chance the ratings decline again next week (Daylight Savings Time has a depressing effect on ratings and 8pm shows tend to be hit the hardest) but the last month is not an indication of viewers being over this show.

7. Once Upon a Time (6.66 million 2.2)- This isn’t the strongest return for a show that has been on hiatus since December but it’s not as if ABC has done a stellar job on Sundays these last 3 months either. This is just a matter of getting to May at this point because they know they are going to need to fill 2 hours next season to follow this show and the choice will come down to trying something new, sticking with poorly performing shows or going with a combination of the two.

8. The Following (4.86 million 1.6)- This show comes in with numbers that aren’t much better than the previous occupant (Sleepy Hallow). I don’t think numbers like these will make fans of either show rest easily until may because if these numbers slide there’s a chance the show gets canceled. If the numbers hold then there’s no guarantee that the show gets renewed.

9. Marvel’s Agent Carter (4.02 million 1.3)- Ratings alone will absolutely not save this show. This show has done nothing to raise an argument for ABC to order another 8 episodes. The Marvel connection could possibly save it but the Marvel connection could also promise ABC another miniseries as well. You never know these things and that’s why the show may not be dead but the likelihood says that it probably is.

10. Ru Paul’s Drag Race (348,000 0.2)- I know I have seen better Logo numbers for this show but I also acknowledge that it’s been years since I’ve seen some consistent numbers (and those were usually just repeats on VH1). So I don’t have a large frame of reference for this show. I do know this is the 7th season and this is basically the highest rated show on Logo and that has to count for something.
