10 Ratings Blurbs: 12/23/14 Edition

This may be the last 10 ratings blurbs post for the year but if it isn't I'm pretty sure it will be delayed because once I figure out what isn't taking the next week or two off I still probably won't see numbers until perhaps next Wednesday and that could be a tossup.

1. The Voice (12.88 million 3.3)- I think NBC is beginning to fear life without The Voice. This show was the foundation for them turning their network around but now that the protective glow from this show has faded it exposes how their fortunes really haven’t improved much at all. The second half of the season will answer quite a few questions for NBC and I don’t think any of those questions fully address how much this show is overworked.

2. Masterchef Junior (5.61 million 1.7)- This show isn’t going to get much of a break because the new season will start in a couple of weeks. I still think FOX is going overboard but obviously they want to try to support a very weak Tuesday lineup and these numbers help a little bit.

3. Real World: Skeletons (654,000 0.3)- MTV shouldn’t be surprised with how bad these numbers are. They threw in a twist nobody cared about, premiered the show in December and they threw it on a Tuesday night when it typically airs on Wednesdays. Of course it is the first week so fortunes do have the opportunity to change but it really does appear like MTV does just enough with one season to earn a renewal only to spend the next 2 seasons derailing that success.

4. Beyond Scared Straight (9pm: 1.343 million 0.3; 10pm: 1.400 million 0.6)- It seems like this season was very short but this show doesn’t really follow the traditional cut and dry season scheduling. It comes around when the network is ready for it and then it goes away again but it is the end of the year so a lot of shows are going to go on breaks for the holidays anyway.

5. Homeland (1.920 million 0.6)- I’ve mentioned quite a few times before that this show is no Dexter and it will never be a Dexter. However it’s now the highest rated show on the network and Showtime is fine with that because they have never really been able to keep up with the top shows on HBO anyway. Besides they will take a show that can get a million viewers without help so a show that can hover around 2 million is definitely a keeper.

6. Hell’s Kitchen (8pm: 3.62 million 1.3; Finale: 3.60 million 1.3)- If I recall correctly this show is coming back in March which isn’t strange but it feels strange only because fall seasons of this show are so uncommon. FOX had a disastrous fall and midseason is looking no better but they may actually really try to hold out until March so they don’t have to start wrecking their summer slate.

7. Elementary (7.57 million 1.3)- This show isn’t going on a very long break. I believe this will be back the first week of January and I don’t blame CBS. They are going to have to renew this show and they know the numbers aren’t getting better. This midseason will be about scouting a potential landing spot on the farm (Sunday or Friday) while figuring out which veteran needs to go to make that happen.

8. Hollywood Divas (271,000 0.2)- This is the first TVOne show where I have gotten the opportunity to look at a complete season of numbers. In a way I do wish I still had a way to reference some of the other shows but apparently these numbers were still good enough for the network to renew despite not really setting any ratings records. I would have thought the numbers should have been a little higher than this (perhaps about 50-75k more viewers) but it’s hard to say that when I don’t know how the other shows on the network are performing.

9. Suave Says (233,000 0.1)- I don’t know why VH1 moved this show. I suppose this show has a few more episodes than I thought and there was no way it could be over before January 14th but whatever the reasoning is, it’s not a good one. The show had no shot to get renewed on Wednesdays and it really doesn’t have a chance now behind a much weaker lead-in.

10. Bye Felicia (378,000 0.2)- I know VH1 expected a pretty harsh drop for this second week but I don’t think they predicted a drop this dramatic. I got the impression that they actually believed that some people were really going to come back and give this show another chance after getting some respectable sampling for the premiere but the off-night Love & Hip Hop curse strikes again.
