10 Ratings Blurbs: 7/29/14 Edition

This is a pretty varied list this week. There's a decent share of premiere and finale news here, there's some renewal news here and there are a couple of specials on the list as well.

1. Teen Wolf (1.565 million 0.7)- I’m not surprised MTV gave this a fifth season and I’m not surprised the season will have a large order either. The split season thing works for this show though admittedly these numbers look lower than usual this week.

2. Hit the Floor (1.959 million 1.0)- Probably not a good time to hit season low numbers just as VH1 announced a pickup for season 3. Though the numbers have improved from last season, (mostly because last season was plagued by a very slow start) I don’t see this show really living up to its potential. Still the renewal is deserved and as it stands it is VH1’s second highest rated show this year. I don’t expect the show to finish the year at #2 but I don’t see it falling out of the top 5 either (I don’t think 3 shows are going to do better than this for the rest of the year).

3. Hell’s Kitchen (5.17 million 1.7)- I really don’t think these are bad ratings and because it’s summer I will probably never think that these are bad ratings. Still I have concerns about this show having a quick turnaround. FOX is poised to have a very rocky season over the next year and numbers like these probably will be good from September all the way to May. My concern is that viewer fatigue has a chance to really set in here and slipping to a 1.2-1.4 demo is well within reach and if the show hits that, perceptions of the vitality of this show will change quickly.

4. Project Runway (1.644 million 0.5)- If I recall correctly this should be pretty close to what the premiere for last season got. Like the seasons before it, Lifetime doesn’t care because they are still working through a multi-year deal with this show and this season isn’t the end of that deal. I’m not under the impression that this season’s numbers will be taken into account in terms of making a new deal but I am under the impression that Lifetime will never make another massive multi-season order for this show again.

5. Real Housewives of NYC (1.504 million 0.6)- This season has been a disappointment for Bravo and that has been the case for this show for the last 3 seasons. Clearly Bravo is unhappy and none of the changes they have made have resonated with viewers so it all comes down to whether Bravo will make a smart decision and just throw in the towel or remain stubborn and keep making changes to find something that works again.

6. Extant (6.48 million 1.1)- This show skews pretty old but that’s not a surprise because this is a scripted CBS show after all. These ratings are not good though. I have no knowledge of the cost of this show but I would have to imagine this is a fairly expensive show because of the lead actress and the graphics and numbers like these aren’t going to cut it even in the summer.

7. Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars (769,000 0.3)- Overall this season did pretty well. You really can’t diminish numbers like these on a Friday night from a small network. People sought this show out, they watched it and they stuck with it so there shouldn’t be any complaints about it.

8. Soundclash (111,000 0.1)- This is without question the lowest premiere I have ever seen for a VH1 show in the 5 or so years I’ve been collecting ratings. To be honest I’m still not sure if this is a show or just a 2 week special. Either way the last episode of this will air tomorrow and I don’t think VH1 will bother trying to do something like this again with absolutely no viewer interest in the concept.

9. Preachers of LA (432,000 0.2)- Since the premiere is still a few weeks away, I’m not going to say this is a bigger indication of something bad coming up. Oxygen pre-premiere specials never do all that well because people are interested in the show and not whatever filler footage they put in these specials.

10. Sisterhood of Hip Hop (398,000 0.2)- Like Preachers of LA, I’m not putting too much stock into these numbers. Oxygen knows that they will need to do a little bit more work on the promotion end but nothing else can be said until the actual numbers start coming in.
