10 Ratings Blurbs: 7/15/14 Edition

July is turning out to be a very slow news month. Nothing really notable on the cable show front, the broadcast shows aren't exactly lighting up things and cable networks are putting all their stock on shows that have yet to premiere.

1. Devious Maids (2.225 million 0.8)- Lifetime would be lying if they were to say anything other than this show had a disappointing season. They won’t admit it publicly but last year a lot of tough decisions were made and it looked like the network expected this show to carry them through it. It hasn’t really done that but with a highly unstable and uncertain scripted slate I think they have no choice but to try another season of this show and hope that the viewers will catch on then.

2. Catfish: The TV Show (1.700 million 1.0)- MTV rewarded the end of this season with a swift renewal. It is not a surprise. This is a top 3 show on the network. Perhaps MTV had higher expectations for this show and perhaps those expectations were justified but they have what they have with this show and there’s no reason to punish the show for not being bigger than it is.

3. Real Housewives of New Jersey (2.144 million 0.9)- Bravo might be a tiny bit disappointed with this. These numbers aren’t bad but normal for this show is a little bit better than this. This is still the premiere episode so there is a lot of time to get back up to the solid #2 show status it is known to have.

4. Hell’s Kitchen (4.79 million 1.5)- FOX is spreading this show fairly thin. I’m assuming the finale will be due soon but with an early September return, this show is not going to be away for very long. I understand the show has a fairly steady and devoted audience but these are far from blockbuster numbers and these same numbers will not have the same sort of neutral impression when September rolls around.

5. Switched At Birth (1.558 million 0.6)- So this is beginning to get back up into familiar territory but it is a mighty slow crawl to get there. ABC Family as always has issues with other shows on other nights so these numbers now have a very good chance of getting another pass because of those problems elsewhere.

6. Ridiculousness (1.486 million 0.7)- These are normal numbers for this show and MTV has shown that they are perfectly content with them. With no major hit shows on the network MTV needs solid shows like this one to stay afloat.

7. Teen Wolf (1.719 million 0.8)- I don’t have too much to say about the show. The numbers are steady and the numbers for this show have been steady for a couple of seasons now. The numbers aren’t mind-blowing but at least MTV can be sure that the people who show up now will keep showing up every week.

8. Inside The Walking Dead (Part 1) (943,000 0.4)- AMC knows they have a huge show with The Walking Dead and AMC knows people are excited for the new season. That being said a special in the middle of the summer isn’t helping. The people will be here in October but you can’t fault them for not being here now. Nobody wants to throw away an hour of their time.

9. R&B Divas: Atlanta (Reunion Part 2)- I don’t see TV One ratings very often. When I do they are almost always under 500,000 viewers so I have reason to believe that this is a good showing despite the numbers. When looking at these numbers one has to remember that while the show itself may get the same amount of coverage on urban blogs as VH1 and Bravo shows, the numbers will never compare to the two networks I just mentioned because TV One is a much smaller network targeting an even more niche audience than VH1 and Bravo.

10. Pretty Little Liars (2.249 million 1.0)- So this was the 100th episode and these numbers don’t look all that different from the last 45-50 episodes. Event programming isn’t going to work with this show. ABC Family should just be happy that this show reached 100 episodes because not many shows get to do that and even fewer cable shows can claim that honor.
