10 Ratings Blurbs: 3/27/18 Edition

The winter shows are coming to a close and the spring shows are beginning. That also means it's the unofficial start of shows beginning to post sagging ratings across the board. In the past, we've had a few shows that had large numbers to cover up things elsewhere. It doesn't look like there's going to be a show like that to come along this year.

1. Braxton Family Values (921,000 0.3)- This isn’t quite where we’re used to seeing the show, but it’s pretty close to last season’s numbers and it’s continuing to show that this is WE’s veteran headline show. Age and the network’s troubles might be getting to it, but it’s losses aren’t nearly as dramatic as other shows have seen.

2. RuPaul’s Drag Race (785,000 0.4)- It is helpful to have numbers from last season to compare this show to. Much like last season, the comparison is still a little skewed (last season, the show made the move to VH1 from Logo. This season, the show moved to Thursday. after airing on Fridays last season). The premiere numbers are down from last season (it came in at 987k). However, I’m not too concerned because the show took a drop after the premiere and never got back over 800k until the finale. Because the all-stars season aired before this, I think viewers are used to seeing the show air here and we may not get the wild ratings swings that plagued last season.

3. Little Women LA (793,000 0.2)- If you only compare these numbers to the Little Women franchise numbers of the last 6-9 months, this isn’t bad. It shows that there’s still some life in the show even if the franchise as a whole may be in a place where it has lost its way.

4. Teyana & Iman (1.562 million 0.8)- These numbers are bordering on the line between okay and just a little bit troubling. It did lose quite a few viewers from Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, but with the way that show is looking so far this season, it is not going to be able to provide the kind of support that shows like this one have seen in the past. It’s a bit of a missed gamble because this show was due to premiere a month ago, but VH1 waited because they believed Love & Hip Hop Atlanta would be the far better lead-in than the New York version.

5. Vanderpump Rules (1.369 million 0.6)- This show seemed to come out okay on a night that didn’t have a major event to throw off the schedule. Can’t say the same for a lot of other shows on cable last night.

6. Married to Medicine (949,000 0.3)- This is a strong finish to a show that got off to a mediocre start. Friday has revealed itself to be quite the niche for cable shows (particularly in winter), but cable networks continue to fear the night. I think it can work with the right shows if the network knows their audience.

7. Leave it to Stevie (Premiere: 1.478 million 0.7; Episode 2: 1.379 million 0.7)- This returns a little more than a year since the last season ended. Unsurprisingly, these numbers are down from season 1. The third show in line tends to be the unlucky one and this show may have the misfortune of being thrown on the schedule at a time where the shows in front of it are probably not going to meet their original ratings expectations.

8. MasterChef Junior (3.316 million 0.8)- These numbers are a little off from the most recent season of Hell’s Kitchen, but the show is still in decent territory here. This week, FOX will be more worried about how the long winter break affected their Wednesday lineup.

9. VH1 Beauty Bar (656,000 0.3)- Four episodes into the season, this hit a season high. I’m not entirely convinced the rise is because of viewers warming up to the show. I believe the boost is because Black Ink Crew nearly hit its own season high number last Wednesday as well.

10. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.072 million 0.5)- I feel like we’re at the point in the season where if ABC hasn’t said anything about a show, they’re not going to say anything until the week before the upfronts in May. In my opinion, that means this show’s fate will be tied to desperation. How desperate will Marvel be to have and keep a show on broadcast television (particularly one that is already eligible for syndication)? How desperate will ABC feel to punt on Fridays for one more year while they try to shore up their schedule elsewhere? If the answer is quite desperate, then I can see the show surviving for one more season. If not, the show dies in May and likely won’t have the chance to get a proper series finale.
