The list is back in its full glory. There will be lots of things to say as networks begin to transition to their spring schedules.
1. Love & Hip Hop: Miami (1.684 million 0.9)- We’ve reached the end of the first season (there are only reunion episodes left to air) and while the schedule has been tricky, the numbers have not been. The numbers are certainly good enough to warrant another season. The numbers from the episodes that aired alone or behind a clip show showed no signs of impending weakness. The nature of the franchise (in its current form) is such that people can be moved to and from other shows and new people can be incorporated so that the show doesn’t necessarily depend on one or two people to ensure the show’s survival. I believe the show will return, but I’ll wait a couple of weeks to get into my thinking behind how it could fit on their schedule.
2. The Walking Dead (6.820 million 2.9)- This is the only show that appeared to take a sizeable hit on Sunday. Some of the losses can be blamed on the Academy Awards, but I don’t think all of the blame goes to it. We’ll figure that out to see if it rebounds next week. If it goes back up to where it was, the awards were to blame. If it stays here or if it goes back up a little, it indicates a deeper problem with the show itself.
3. Mama June: From Not to Hot (936,000 0.3)- This show saw a surge for the finale. It’s definitely one of the better results for WE so far this year. On numbers alone, the show should get renewed. However, the skeletons of the TLC predecessor will always follow the show and keep it in the minds of others that a return isn’t always guaranteed.
4. Married to Medicine (859,000 0.3)- The numbers came up a little several weeks ago and they have managed to stay around here. I didn’t think the show was in trouble earlier in the season and I have no questions about it now. It is going to be renewed, Bravo wouldn’t do a three part reunion on a show that they had no plans of continuing.
5. MasterChef Junior (3.397 million 0.9)- These numbers came in basically mimicking the numbers of the most recent season of Hell’s Kitchen. Stability with these shows tends to be a reliable thing, so while there may be a few small fluctuations over the next few weeks, I expect the show to remain in this area over the course of this season.
6. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (1.285 million 0.6)- E! aired the season finale of their headline show on a night where they would usually skip programming to do wall to wall awards coverage. It’s a testament to how much the show has fallen, but it is also a testament to how much trouble they would be in if they tried to quit this show right now. The numbers actually went up a little for this finale. Of course the show will be back. At this point, it seems like one of those things where there is too much money involved to sever ties, but the franchise is still profitable enough to keep it going with just a modest return on ratings.
7. Homeland (930,000 0.2)- This is up a little from last week, but the numbers so far are down from last season. It’s still performing well, but as far as numbers go, this season will serve a purpose in helping all those involved to decide if next season should be the final season (Showtime has already renewed the show for next season. While it is rumored that next season will be the final season, it has not been confirmed by the network or the producers of the show).
8. Gotham (2.566 million 0.8)- The good news here is that the long winter break did nothing to this show. The numbers are still pretty low, but I don’t think they are so low that the show is merely walking toward its imminent doom just yet.
9. VH1 Beauty Bar (608,000 0.3)- For the last several years, I’ve been operating on the estimation that the line for renewal for VH1 shows that don’t air on Monday nights is around 600,000 viewers. There have been some exceptions, but for the most part, that has been the case. I don’t think it is good that this show started right on that line and came in with 50% retention from Black Ink Crew. I feel the show is already in a position where it can’t afford to lose any viewers. It’s not promising because most new shows experience a drop in viewership with the second episode.
10. Once Upon a Time (2.140 million 0.4)- We learned over the winter break that ABC plans to end the show this season. It isn’t much of a shock. Much of the original cast is gone and they moved the show to Friday nights. The odds to survive were against it, but now we know the end is near.
