10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/12/16 Edition

1. Chicago Med (8.392 million 1.9)- All three shows did pretty well with their winter returns. I want to attribute it to the fact that the shows came back with a heavily promoted crossover event (because all 3 had similar ratings). We will just have to wait a couple more weeks to see if that is the case (Fire or Med won’t air tonight because of the State of the Union address).

2. The Haves and the Have Nots (3.109 million 0.9)- I’m still not quite sure what makes people watch this show in numbers that aren’t duplicated with the other Tyler Perry OWN shows. Perhaps the better night is a factor (this airs on Tuesdays and a couple of those shows air on Fridays) but there has to be another reason. I’m not all that keen on finding out why because I’m not about to sit and start watching these shows to try to figure it out.

3. Love & Hip Hop (2.708 million 1.4)- This is down a little bit from the last 2 episodes but it is up from the first 2 episodes of the season. This is certainly trending in the direction of being one of the stronger seasons for this particular series. I don’t see it getting to the territory of being the highest rated season of the series (That honor goes to season 4) but it is closing in on being the second highest rated (Season 2).

4. 2 Broke Girls (6.290 million 1.7)- This isn’t a bad return for a show that now has to settle in a Wednesday home with a show (Mike & Molly) that is being forced to unceremoniously play out its final season. CBS likes utility player comedies. One has to wonder if this show is being set up to be that show because Mike & Molly is coming to an end.

5. American Idol (Wednesday: 10.964 million 3.0 Thursday: 10.206 million 2.7)- We all knew this show would not be what it was at its peak. The glory days are gone and while this won’t fill the void of Empire’s long hiatus, it will outperform basically every other show on the network for the rest of the season.

6. Teen Wolf (1.112 million 0.4)- These numbers are okay. They weren’t overly impressive but a lot of people weren’t waiting on pins and needles for this show anyway (That would go to The Shannara Chronicles which by the way isn't a flop but so far not a hit yet either).

7. Dance Moms (1.370 million 0.5)- Late last year, I started researching ratings for the last couple of seasons of this show. What I can say is this looks to be down a little from last season’s premiere but it is about even with how most of last season played out. This show appears to have a very dedicated audience.

8. Teen Mom OG (1.702 million 1.0)- So far, MTV’s 2016 is starting off a whole lot better than 2015. They have some buzz around a new show and the veterans haven’t all crashed and burned with this show leading the way.

9. Elementary (6.713 million 1.2)- My comment for this show isn’t about the ratings. The total viewers are a bit higher but that demo is still quite low. What I want to say is that it appears that CBS finally agrees that these ratings aren’t great. Does it mean the show is heading for cancellation? Who knows (My guess is probably not) but they have decided that the show is moving to Sundays (aka the syndication farm) in March. It will have company there because those shows have ratings just as bad or worse than this and at least one of those shows will probably return next year.

10. Real Husbands of Hollywood (747,000 0.3)- Right away, these numbers make me think that perhaps the first half of the season wasn’t a fluke and that viewers really are drifting away from this show. What worries me is that this is just the return and BET shows tend to perform best for premieres (midseason premieres included) and trail off as the season goes on. If this is the high point for this batch of episodes, then these could be the final episodes for the series.
