10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/20/16 Edition

Can't help the holiday delays. Fortunately, this is the last one for a long while.

1. Pretty Little Liars (2.246 million 1.1)- It isn’t a huge return and it looks like maybe these weren’t quite the numbers that Freeform were hoping for, especially on the day of the new network brand debut. That being said, these aren’t bad numbers. Last night’s episode probably dropped a little (those numbers won’t be out until tomorrow) but this will still be the highest rated show on that network.

2. American Horror Story: Hotel (2.245 million 1.2)- These numbers started off so well and while it is easy to believe that the show tanked, FX cannot and will not panic over a 1.2 demo (not when said 1.2 demo would get a scripted show comfortably renewed on the main FOX channel). It will be back in the fall with another chance at an impressive start.

3. Duck Dynasty (Premiere: 2.070 million 0.7; Episode 2: 1.996 million 0.7)- This is the show nobody talks about anymore. I guess people assumed it would be a goner after the controversy before season 5. Now, the show has made it all the way to season 9 and it is still A&E’s highest rated show. Go figure.

4. Real Housewives of Potomac (2.055 million 0.9)- For a new Housewives series, it is a promising start. What concerns me a little is that this lost around 1.1 million viewers from its RHOA lead-in. Maybe that retention gap closes as viewers get more familiar with this show but this is a pretty good start.

5. Mob Wives: The Last Stand (Premiere: 1.324 million 0.6; Episode 2: 1.364 million 0.7)- This is up from last season’s premiere and it is practically even with the season 4 premiere. We all know this is the final season for the show so the ratings won’t matter much. I suppose the ratings will drop a little but I don’t expect the numbers to tank over the rest of the season.

6. The Challenge: Battle of the Bloodlines (879,000 0.5)- After somewhat of a rocky start, this is quietly putting together a decent season. This isn’t the kind of show that will take off as the season wears on, but it is the kind of show that should be judged on only the merits of the current season.

7. Hit the Floor (1.707 million 0.8)- I think these numbers are okay. Could have done a little better, but that’s not what concerns me here. My worry is that this show is following the same track as Single Ladies did a couple years ago. This is a successful, hit scripted show on a network flooded with reality shows. Like Single Ladies, season 3 is coming off a brutally long hiatus (season 2 wrapped up 17 months ago). If it were to continue to follow that track, then this would be the final season of the show despite having more than acceptable ratings to continue. I would hope that VH1 doesn’t make the same idiotic mistake twice, but I can’t shake the feeling because VH1 once again has the choice to go for a new scripted prospect and an overflow of reality shows (freshman and veteran shows) clamoring to claim one of those valuable Monday night slots. It could be a thing where cost and chasing something new to help boost ratings rather than simply maintain them could outweigh continuing an otherwise successful project.

8. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.805 million 0.7)- These numbers are average for this particular show but decent for Bravo shows in general. Can’t say anything bad about a show that does its job.

9. MasterChef: Celebrity Showdown (4.183 million 1.5)- Nothing more than a Monday night filler special. This did perform better than the Friday shows and it may be called upon again, but FOX doesn’t care that much. They are just hoping that the new show scheduled to premiere next Monday can at least match these numbers.

10. Hell’s Kitchen (3.413 million 1.1)- This is a pretty low start for the show. I don’t get why FOX decided to take this route with MasterChef Junior still on. I get that Friday is a dead night, but it is puzzling how FOX has taken the route of ruining a decent performer when they have shows on other nights doing worse than this.
