10 Ratings Blurbs: 1/27/15 Edition

A lot of CW shows in here mostly because I'll try to avoid talking about them for the rest of the season unless I absolutely need something as filler.

1. American Horror Story: Freak Show (3.271 million 1.6)- With Sons of Anarchy now over the next season of this show is now in a great position to be the top rated show on FX (barring any freshman surprises). FX won’t see these kind of numbers for a while (and by while I don’t mean tomorrow because I don’t expect The Americans to make some sort of meteoric impact when it returns tomorrow).

2. Black Ink Crew (2.124 million 1.1)- It’s been just about 10 months since the last new episode for this show aired and I had to look up the numbers. So this is better than last season’s premiere and finale but it was lower rated than 8 of the 18 episodes that aired so it’s a decent start. Certainly the highest rated premiere of the 3 seasons so far.

3. The Flash (3.87 million 1.4)- As I said last week The CW made things very boring when they renewed 8 of their 9 current scripted shows. Since this is the highest rated show of the network the early renewal was coming but I wasn’t expecting it to be this early.

4. Arrow (3.06 million 1.1)- This show over all other CW shows was guaranteed a renewal no matter what. It is a show in its third season. It needs a fourth for syndication purposes and now it has it. What happens beyond that just depends on what the network and the creators want for this show and now is not the time to get into that.

5. Supernatural (2.42 million (0.9)- This show is basically relegated to journeyman status. It is the oldest scripted show on the network by far and still chugging along. Unfortunately that means it is the one show that has proven time and time again that it can change nights and the audience will follow. That is going to happen here yet again because it is moving to Wednesdays in March. It is an odd move because of the massive wave of renewals as it appears they still would like to renew at least one more freshman show (iZombie) by giving it the best lead-in possible.

6. The Vampire Diaries (1.63 million 0.8)- With this show I have to wonder what the future holds. There is a possibility that next season could be the final season for the show. Of course we know once CW shows get beyond a certain point they can live on seemingly forever but this show doesn’t really have to. The show spent much of its existence practically carrying the network and now that burden is gone so outside of the ratings which aren’t bad but of course clearly not among the top 3 anymore, you have to wonder if the network may want to let the show go out on its own terms if that is what the creators would like to do.

7. Real World: Skeletons (1.018 million 0.6)- This show got off to a very rough start but it looks like the recovery is in order. Perhaps The Challenge is helping it (it’s a complicated explanation and it doesn’t always hold true but basically two new shows being on one night can help both shows better than if there was only one show fighting to attract viewers by itself).

8. Justified (2.172 million 0.6)- So this is the last season of the show and no one is really expecting a Sons of Anarchy type finish for it. This is a show that has always skewed quite a bit older than their other shows and those total viewers often saved it. The skew here doesn’t appear as dramatic as previous seasons but that could be because the demo is already hovering near the line which would be considered low for the network.

9. Resurrection (3.73 million 1.0)- Some decisions to renew or cancel shows are much easier than others. This is an easy call. The show is not coming back. Syndication economics aren’t in play here and there are two other low rated dramas that make better arguments for renewal. At least one of those other two shows will get renewed (I’m talking about Nashville and Revenge with Nashville being the show most favored for renewal) but like Resurrection last season, ABC is putting a lot of faith in their March freshman premieres so they can point to another temporary success story and they won’t have to be in the uncomfortable position of trying to explain why this show didn’t make it to next season.

10. Two and a Half Men (9.31 million 2.2)- This is only here because it is filler and probably the last time I mention this show before the series finale next month. The ratings are not terrible but they are far from memorable. Sadly CBS doesn’t have much to lean on with their comedies so it is getting harder to want to part with the veterans when their newer shows haven’t gained much traction.
