10 Ratings Blurbs: 10/7/14 Edition

After a premiere week which showed no DOA shows, a few shows are beginning to show the effects of age, scheduling changes and viewer fatigue. Surprisingly it appears that the veterans are looking weaker than the rookies but that still won't be enough to save all of those new shows.

1. Homeland (1.610 million 0.6)- I don’t recall seeing a press release or any early numbers for this show yesterday so it’s safe to say this is down from last year and Showtime would rather wait for some DVR numbers to spin. That being said, this is still a good outing. I would worry a little if the numbers drop but Showtime makes it clear that they have a very low renewal threshold so the show will have quite a bit of room to fall before the time comes to sound the alarms.

2. The Strain (2.091 million 1.0)- I don’t think I’ve said anything about this show since FX renewed it weeks ago. The show exceeded expectations because it showed them that Sunday nights can work for them. I do give FX credit for the timing of this show though because they would not have been able to stand a chance against The Walking Dead next week.

3. T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle (9pm: 1.650 million 0.9; 9:30pm: 1.488 million 0.8)- This show only has a few more episodes to go before the season is over (my estimation is somewhere between 2-4 episodes). This show has fallen off hard this season likely because of the overexposure but also because the off-season exploits of this family don’t align with what takes place on the show. Since the numbers for that second episode are basically the same as how Atlanta Exes had been doing the last couple of weeks, I don’t have too much faith that the spinoff next week will come out strong.

4. The Vampire Diaries (1.81 million 0.9)- Before I saw the numbers for The Originals I wanted to say these numbers were a result of this show showing its age. It may very well be the case but that will depend on how the rest of their premieres pan out. For now I will reserve judgement.

5. Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood (2.185 million 1.2)- I don’t know how many episodes VH1 ordered for this show but I think that they won’t be quietly sneaking in episodes at the end. This show still hasn’t really found a ratings floor yet and it is well within Basketball Wives: LA territory. Perhaps some slick, last minute editing may bring the ratings up towards the end of the season but it is not the breakout hit VH1 was expecting it to be although it isn’t really in too much danger of being canceled either.

6. Teen Mom (1.891 million 1.2)- This show was a shell of its former self this season. I think MTV caught on to that after the first few weeks but when you’re experiencing a slow period that sees not one breakout rookie hit and not one show that averages 2 million viewers per week it is hard to dwell on what could have been. I’m not sure MTV can afford to cancel this show but the real question is can they afford to keep it when it is practically tied with Teen Wolf and Catfish for being the highest rated show on the network and it is the oldest show of the three.

7. The Bridge (1.027 million 0.3)- I imagine FX doesn’t know what to do with this show. The numbers say it really should be canceled. This is a very low finish for a scripted show and unlike the comedies, this doesn't have the opportunity to move to FXX as a safety net for the network to overlook the bad numbers.

8. The Originals (1.36 million 0.7)- As I said with The Vampire Diaries, I think I’ll reserve judgment until I see some numbers from Arrow, The Flash and Supernatural. Those are the 3 shows expected to draw the strongest numbers and if the 2 veterans return lower then it may be a sign that The CW’s lucky streak may be in serious jeopardy.

9. Witches of East End (9pm: 1.137 million 0.5; 10pm: 1.032 million 0.4)- If Lifetime doesn’t know what to do with this show then I don’t blame them. They just renewed Devious Maids after seeing lower season 2 numbers and I expect them to cancel The Lottery. Drop Dead Diva closed its final season over the summer so that leaves this show as the last undecided scripted show. It’s possible Lifetime takes their time to mull over this one because I’m not sure what they have in development and this show doesn’t look like a third season will cure what ails it.

10. Revenge (5.27 million 1.4)- Outside of Thursday nights, the facade at ABC is beginning to crumble. What looked to be a pretty strong premiere week turned into a disastrous week 2 where a lot of new shows and suspect veterans began to show their true colors. This show will definitely have its name thrown around on the list of shows that need to be canceled all year long because outside of another season where only 1-2 new shows manage to survive, there will be no reason to keep it around.
