10 Ratings Blurbs: 6/3/14 Edition

I suppose I should use this intro to say that it is highly unlikely that I make a predictions post for the rest of the summer. I am still contemplating doing away with it completely but I do know I won't be able to do it for at least the next 2 months and August tends to be a pretty slow month when it comes to cable premieres. I am still going to redo the site (To get an idea of how much of an overhaul I'm talking about you can look here for a preview. This site won't look exactly like that one but things will be cleaner). Right now that is looking like it will occur sometime in mid-July. Otherwise barring the weekly post here I'll be spending most of my blogging time at Bourgy recapping Bad Girls Club and the final season of True Blood when that premieres later this month.

1. Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars (862,000 0.4)- This is a pretty good start. WE shows have never been able to put up Friday numbers that were comparable to their Thursday lineup. This is a good start but the test will be to see if this is legitimate interest or just curiosity because of the cast.

2. Devious Maids (2.142 million 0.7)- The viewership for this show is beginning to creep up again but the demo is pretty stubborn. At this point it may be safe to say that this show lost all of the momentum that it had from last season. Since I’m not sure what their new scripted shows are looking like I still believe this show gets renewed but I don’t get the feeling Lifetime thinks this show is meeting expectations this season.

3. So You Think You Can Dance (5.33 million 1.6)- This could have done a whole lot worse than it did. Everyone agrees the show is old and its best days are behind it but since all of the networks have begun to put more effort into their summer program I can see the reasoning for why it is still here. It brings in a few viewers and it does better than reruns. That’s all you need to do as a summer show.

4. Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding (2.442 million 1.0)- This premiere did exactly what it was supposed to do. It brought in a good amount of RHOA viewers and in turn the show helped Married to Medicine after its disastrous showing last week. If the next 5 weeks post similar numbers Bravo will be in a highly precarious position because the temptation to give Kandi yet another spinoff would be strong.

5. The Haves and the Have Nots (3.113 million 1.0)- This is a very good return and to be honest OWN needed it because they haven’t been able to find another show (scripted, reality or otherwise) that can reach a million viewers. I’m not sure what makes this show connect with viewers but I find it highly odd that no one talks about this show being a cable hit (even among African-Americans) with numbers like these.

6. Return to Amish (2.428 million 0.8)- I don’t know why TLC keeps changing the name of this show but apparently they do enough promotion to make it all worthwhile since the viewers do come back. This is up there with their top tier shows and barring any sharp viewer disinterest this season it will probably stay there.

7. America’s Got Talent (12.00 million 3.0)- The difference between this hitting a 3.0 demo and being good and The Voice hitting a 3.0 demo and being underwhelming is because of seasonal perception. For a summer show, a 3.0 demo is good, especially for a premiere because that means the show has a cushion to fall before it looks disappointing. A show hitting a 3.0 for a finale at the end of the official broadcast season is a potential sign of viewer fatigue or the show has simply run out of gas and needs a break.

8. Beauty and the Beast (1.06 million 0.4)- This is definitely the biggest head scratcher of all of the Broadcast renewals this season. The CW pulled the show off the air and now it is airing the remainder of this season’s episodes in the summer. If The CW has plans for season 3 to air next summer then perhaps the renewal is justified because of the lack of original scripted programming in the summer but I’ll be surprised if this is back by January (the show is not on the fall schedule for next season).

9. Longmire (3.862 million 0.7)- Nothing surprising here about these ratings. This has always been a show with high total viewers and a not so impressive demo. I expect more of the same in the coming weeks.

10. Real Housewives of New Jersey (1.618 million 0.7)- Well Bravo should be pleased with this. The preview special got sampled and that’s all that matters. Now if people tune in for the premiere next month and the show returns as the solid #2 show it has always been that will be a good thing even if everything else about the show (mainly the cast) remains uncertain going forward.
