10 Ratings Blurbs: 5/20/14 Edition

This week has a heavy focus on the broadcast shows and next week will likely be the same too as there are a ton of finales going on and the networks are beginning to transition into their summer schedules.

1. This Is Hot 97 (954,000 0.5)- This show is not getting renewed. If nothing else the last 4 weeks were supposed to receive some sort of a boost. The numbers may have still been below 1.5 million but they were supposed to be better. When you’re in a situation where the last 4 episodes are just as low as the first 4 episodes with a much higher lead-in that means this show is not living up to expectations and VH1 can (and will) do better.

2. Arrow (2.37 million 0.9)- This will probably come back just fine in October. The show did lose a little steam over the spring but it managed to recover a little bit for the finale.

3. Grimm (5.34 million 1.3)- This is one of those shows that is going to be in a tricky situation next season. If NBC experiences some early problems then this show will remain on the backburner. If things go smoothly and NBC starts pondering whether they can either do better on Fridays (regardless of if it is scripted programming or not) then this show may not experience the security it has seen the last couple of years. For now NBC really wants to stick with scripted programming on Fridays and this show has played a big part in making sure that continues.

4. The Originals (1.76 million 0.8)- Of The CW’s Big 4, this show is the one that is going to move nest season. They are banking on The Flash doing what this show did this year in not needing the original show to help the rookie spinoff. Yes it worked to some degree last year but that doesn’t mean this move will work a second time. I don’t like the new Monday night paring with Jane the Virgin and there’s a possibility that this show may spend a lot of the fall airing alone until they decide to throw either a new show (either iZombie or The Messengers) or a disappointing sophomore (either Reign or The 100) behind it.

5. Elementary (7.37 million 1.4)- CBS is deciding to stay the course on this show and while it’s probably not the best idea, they still have a couple of other shows that are a lot closer to the TV graveyard than this one. This show will have the equivalent of a lame duck season because the ratings are not going to matter at all. Unlike Nashville, there is no worry that CBS could pull a shocker by canceling a 3rd season show. CBS is about their syndication money and they have a farm where they send old shows to die a slow death. This show will only be in line to get to the farm.

6. Nashville (5.24 million 1.3)- All eyes will be on this show next year and it will follow the same blueprint as Revenge. This show is now the third season show that needs a fourth season for syndication and the ratings for this third season will most likely be awful. As I said with The Mindy Project last week, keep a close eye on the episode order. The closer it is to a full season (to my knowledge this show currently has a full season order) the less likely the network is to cancel it next season. If ABC starts trimming episodes or scheduling random specials during sweeps months  then be afraid.

7. Glee (1.87 million 0.6)- FOX wants this show to be over. They know they have to suffer through another season of this and they do have some time to figure out how they will do it since it won’t be returning in the fall. The unfortunate thing is their schedule could be a disaster waiting to happen so there’s a chance this show may return before the year is over with even though that is not the plan.

8. Bad Girls Club: Chicago (994,000 0.4)- This is the lowest premiere rating since season 4 and the show is continuing the trend of being a dying show. Seriously Oxygen wants to move on from the show but with only one other show putting up comparable numbers (a show that also doesn’t have a premiere date for its new season yet) they can’t so they are looking to pull out all of the gimmicks for next season and they will probably become more pronounced if the numbers for this season remain dismal.

9. Chicago Fire (7.12 million 1.9)- I think NBC was smart in not ordering a 3rd show for this franchise just yet. They took a gamble on expanding the franchise this year and although the numbers aren’t fantastic, things were far from a disaster as well. NBC is going in the right direction as far as their dramas are concerned. They need to find a few strong comedies but they are in a position where things don’t look too bad on the horizon and this show should be safe for the next couple of years.

10. The Vampire Diaries (1.61 million 0.8)- Every year at the end of the season this show always looks like it is losing a lot of steam and next season will be a trainwreck because of it. However when the fall rolls around the show manages to bounce back and stay strong for 75% of the season. That may happen next season but it will be different because The CW isn’t expecting this show to save them when their fall lineup has a soft start (mostly because nobody is expecting The CW to have a soft start next season).
