10 Ratings Blurbs: 2/4/14 Edition

Football season is over, winter doesn't seem to want to end in the Midwest and I need to get some stuff together (more on that next week). For now there's ratings and my opinion on them.

1. Super Bowl XLVIII (112.19 million 39.3)- The football fan in me is sad that the football season has now come to an end. The ratings analyst in me is surprised that these are record-breaking ratings because blowouts are typically not at all good for ratings.

2. Switched at Birth (1.625 million 0.7)- When those week 2 numbers came in things started to look a little troubling for this show. Now the show is back where it normally resides and it appears stable (especially with The Fosters experiencing an odd decline over the last 3 weeks). Still the Monday night lineup is not the one that is in trouble. ABC Family will still look at Ravenswood (Finale is tonight) and Twisted (Returns next week) because that is where their next decision needs to be made.

3. Anger Management (758,000 0.3)- That can’t be a good thing that I just now realized this was back...or perhaps I caught the first week it came back. I’m not all that sure. At this point FX is sighing heavily and counting down the days until this is over.

4. American Horror Story: Coven (4.242 million 2.2)- It’s a good thing to end the season on a high note. FX really has something special with this show and well going by the show above this one on the list I get the feeling that they wonder why their dramas do so much better than their comedies.

5. Single Ladies (2.178 million 1.1)- Before today I was going to say that I expect the ratings for this show to drop in 2 weeks (with the return of Basketball Wives: LA). Then I recalled that Single Ladies has a different history with Basketball Wives (both cities) than it does with Love & Hip Hop (both cities). Single Ladies traditionally lags behind Love & Hip Hop and the retention is not usually up to par compared to the reality shows that follow Love & Hip Hop. With Basketball Wives the retention is typically stellar and often times this show will outperform Basketball Wives. I’ll be looking to see if the same holds true this season.

6. The Haves and the Have Nots (2.783 million 1.0)- This show is really hanging in there. It came back strong and it hasn’t really tapered off. What makes this more impressive is that Love Thy Neighbor (the scripted show that airs on Wednesday nights) is technically also pulling above average ratings for OWN and those numbers look like a huge disappointment in comparison to this one (last Wednesday’s episode of that show pulled 892,000 viewers with a 0.3 demo).

7. Braxton Family Values (1.126 million 0.5)- I’m really just putting this on here because I needed to fill the list and I’m aware that the finale for the season is in a couple of weeks. The numbers seem to fluctuate a lot but when the show is still the network’s highest rated show it almost doesn’t matter what the show does.

8. Two and a Half Men (8.86 million 2.0)- Everyone knows this show is old, everyone knows this show is not on the good side of its lifespan and everyone knows that any type of revival (ala Supernatural) is not in the cards for this show. What everyone doesn’t know is how much longer CBS will try to stick with this show. They could give it the final season treatment if they really wanted to but at the same time they can also just say they feel better about next year and give it the boot. Nobody knows and nobody will really know how they are feeling until they start getting some of their early renewals out of the way.

9. Being Human (1.150 million 0.5)- I don’t usually like when borderline shows get renewed because most of the time they return with those same borderline ratings and then I’m conflicted with making a call on them. This show could still get canceled after this season. However the likelihood of that appears to be diminishing because Syfy does not appear to be all that pleased with the performances of Lost Girl and Bitten (hence the timeslot switch) and this show is fairly steady when compared to last season.

10. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (1.914 million 0.8)- This show is probably always going to be the Real Housewives show that could and should be doing better. Since it is not the lowest rated one it won’t get the flack or the help that NYC or Miami seems to get. It will get another season. That part is true (of course the cast shakeup rumors are already flying). But that doesn’t change the fact that Bravo wanted this show to be more like Atlanta and New Jersey and not like a less prolific Orange County (The accolades for Orange County are mostly due to its longevity and ratings increases in the last 2 seasons).
