10 Ratings Blurbs: 12/19/17 Edition

I'm going to make this the last full ratings post of the year. I'll post some numbers next week, but I guarantee it won't be before Wednesday. I don't know how extensive the delays will be. I'll be back at full capacity by January 9th.

1. Real Housewives of Atlanta (2.339 million 1.0)- With no Walking Dead in the way, this was the top cable show on Sunday. It isn’t a shock because there is still a major ratings gap between a show like The Walking Dead and nearly every other cable show on TV (and most other broadcast shows too).

2. Remy & Papoose: A Merry Mackie Holiday (1.238 million 0.6)- This is a little lower than I expected, but I’m going to attribute that to Love & Hip Hop coming in noticeably lower last night. It remains one of the better performing specials VH1 has aired this year.

3. Empire (5.914 million 1.9)- I would be surprised if the show returns to this level after the long hiatus. It may be one of those situations where the numbers may cause heartburn when seeing them, but that may depend on how some higher profile premieres turn out in a few weeks. If FOX is running on fumes when this show returns, it won’t matter how disappointing the numbers may appear. They are already at the point where renewing this show is a no-brainer.

4. Little Women: Atlanta (757,000 0.3)- This isn’t bad, but Lifetime better hope that some viewers trickle in after the new year. I really don’t understand what’s going on in the mind of these cable executives who think that premiering a show in mid to late December is a good idea. To me, it screams thirst and says that perhaps they didn’t hit their ratings goals and need the new episodes in December to raise their year-to-year ratings averages.

5. Riverdale (1.432 million 0.5)- This show had the most surprising ratings result of the season when it premiered. It was as if The CW found some sort of magical formula that turned a marginal show into a hit (much like the first two seasons of Scandal). The numbers have taken a step back, but that still makes it a middle of the road show. On The CW, that means the show can afford to fall a little more when it returns and it should still be a lock for renewal.

6. Star (4.111 million 1.3)- Though this has consistently pulled lower numbers than Empire, I have the exact same mindset about where the show stands with FOX. I think it’s safe and it will only get safer if they end up with bombs from their midseason premieres. However, I also don’t believe that it will be the first show to get pushed out the door should they find a hit or two.

7. Chicago Med (6.196 million 1.1)- Because the show started so late, they have a ton of episodes to air in the back half of the season. This show (and all NBC shows) will also have to take two weeks off for the Winter Olympics in February. That means there will be small breaks, but this show shouldn’t have to go through an extended 4-6 week break at any point for the rest of the season.

8. Little Women LA: Terra’s Big House (584,000 0.2)- I share the same sentiments here as I’ve been sharing for the past several months with shows in this franchise. They are doing way too much and causing viewer fatigue.

9. Don’t Be Tardy (879,000 0.4)- I’m sure some people can’t understand how this show manages to survive season after season. The best explanation is a combination of a little bit of help and Bravo forcing the show to air in some of the worst primetime timeslots that they have to offer. The show proves time and time again that somebody will watch it whenever it comes on. That’s why I believe the show will be renewed.

10. Once Upon a Time (2.287 million 0.5)- It came out on Friday that this show isn’t going to return until March. I can’t shake the feeling that this show is in some real danger and ABC may possibly be testing for life without the show. At best, I see dim hopes for a pity renewal, but only if the winter proves to be exceptionally brutal to them.
