10 Ratings Blurbs: 12/12/17 Edition

The list is heavily weighed by CW shows reaching their fall finales over the last week. I may be able to squeeze out one more list for the year next week, but it's too early to say that definitively.

1. The Walking Dead (7.885 million 3.4)- There are two different standards applied to this show’s ratings. The first standard is its own recent history. Against that standard, this show is fading fast. The second standard would be how its numbers look compared to everything else on TV. There is not one network who would turn down a show getting these numbers. AMC is still fervently committed to the latter standard. There might be some internal concern going on, but they aren’t going to express it publicly because they don’t have another show like this and the odds are against them to find another show like it soon.

2. The Flash (2.218 million 0.8)- This took a tiny step back after the crossover, but this show’s midseason fate is sealed. Its job is to help launch the new DC show, Black Lightning. The foundation is there to make that possible.

3. Black Ink Crew (1.420 million 0.8)- VH1 made a decision at the beginning of the year that could have spelled absolute doom for the show. They decided to exile the show to Wednesday nights. Last season showed resilience and it made the night so viable that they were also able to comfortably schedule the spinoff to take its place. My only gripe is that they could have just waited 3 more weeks to premiere the show and gave the new season a fresh start during the first week of the New Year.

4. Supernatural (1.735 million 0.6)- This show gets to coast into midseason with knowing that it won’t be moved to a different night or time when it returns. I suppose that is the consolation prize for occupying a timeslot that the network believes no other show not already airing at 8pm (new or existing) can outperform.

5. Black Ink Crew: Chicago (1.200 million 0.7)- This show had an okay start, but managed to pull off a strong finish. You would be crazy to think that it’s not going to return for season 4. It ends the season as one of 12 shows to average over 1 million viewers this year (For perspective, VH1 saw 13 shows reach that mark in 2016 and 9 shows accomplish the same feat in 2015).

6. Gotham (2.533 million 0.8)- The show is in for another brutally long winter break. The ratings, while not good, aren’t exactly discouraging for FOX. It’s a middle of the pack show on a notoriously difficult night and FOX will probably lean heavily on these fall numbers to determine the show’s fate for next season (I think it gets renewed).

7. Arrow (1.304 million 0.4)- You can’t use the ‘old show’ excuse for this show when Supernatural is still going strong on the same network. The network heads have an attachment to this show. It is the show that made the DC wave possible. It is the show that helped them shed the image of a fledgling network that only appealed to teenage girls. We can’t ignore that the show is showing its age and losing a ratings step, but it airs on one of the most forgiving networks around. I wouldn’t worry that the show is in danger of ending this season.

8. Chicago PD (6.518 million 1.2)- I think it is unspoken that NBC would like to see better demo results from their Wednesday night shows. That being said, they have no intention to change things up. They like the vibe they have created and they like that the shows there are stable. Last season showed that the franchise isn’t invincible, but that doesn’t mean they are ready to shove it out the door either.

9. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (1.613 million 0.4)- The CW made it official last week that the show will move to Mondays in February. They have opted for the timeshare strategy where they will air about 4-5 episode of Supergirl (beginning in January), air the back half of this show straight through, then finish the season airing the final handful of episodes of Supergirl. On paper, it sounds confusing, but I think it is the best option they have given their stubborn nature of renewing everything and still wanting to juggle a full slate of freshman pickups. The positives here are that the winter break won’t be that long and there will be no breaks when the show returns.

10. Scared Famous (1.006 million 0.5)- I’ve been hard on this show and while I maintain that the only shot at renewal is if VH1 decides that season 2 will not air on Monday nights, I’ll highlight a few things that could work in this show’s favor. The first and most important factor is cost. By virtue of the show being filmed in Georgia, they can keep their budget low. They also have an incredibly deep roster of people to draw from in order to compile a cast. That’s also beneficial because it can air behind other shows (Drag Race, ANTM or Black Ink Crew) and still be a natural fit. The final factor is that they do still have a portion of viewers who are nostalgic for seeing their favorite reality stars on a VH1 competition show.
