10 Ratings Blurbs: 4/12/16 Edition

I've been somewhat of a ratings junkie for going on six years now. I don't think I've ever had a week where I've had five Real Housewives shows on the same list.

1. American Idol (Special: 5.979 million 1.4; Wednesday: 9.700 million 2.2; Series Finale: 13.305 million 3.0)- Anyone who follows ratings will tell you that hands down, this was the most dominant show of the mid and late 2000’s. 15 seasons (over 13 years) is a very impressive run for any show and I don’t think the lower numbers over the last few years have tainted the overall legacy of the show.

2. Fear the Walking Dead (6.674 million 3.1)- Just when you thought it was safe to program Sunday nights, it’s Fear the Walking Dead. Unfortunately for AMC, the 9pm reign will soon come to an end because Game of Thrones is due to return in 2 weeks. If the viewers don’t flee, it will be very interesting to see how the numbers break (Game of Thrones should comfortably lead in the demo. If this isn’t a premiere bump, the viewership numbers could be evenly matched).

3. Real Housewives of Dallas (1.076 million 0.4)- The good news is that this had very good retention from Southern Charm. The bad news is that this came in lower than Real Housewives of New York City (see #6).

4. Grimm (4.250 million 0.9)- NBC decided to go ahead and renew this show for season 6 last week. As of now, the renewal doesn’t come with any special contingencies (like a shorter season or a final season announcement). The details will hopefully get a little clearer at the upfronts next month.

5. Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn (670,000 0.3)- This show is trying hard to make a case for renewal. These numbers are up from the first three episodes. It should also be noted that the first 3 episodes have all had numbers within 5,000 viewers of each other. If nothing else, this show is turning out to be reliable.

6. Real Housewives of NYC (1.245 million 0.4)- I hope the people at Bravo spent Thursday afternoon scratching their heads. They have done everything they can possibly do to try to revive these numbers and not one thing has worked the last 4 seasons. These numbers may not get too much worse over the course of the season, but they are guaranteed to not get better.

7. Bates Motel (1.418 million 0.6)- I’m not sure what the cause of the 2 week break was for this show, but it doesn’t appear to have damaged the show. These numbers are a little lower than normal. I see no cause for concern here.

8. Behind the Movie (7am Airing- 190,000 0.1: 10pm rerun- 1.036 million 0.5)- VH1 needs to stop self-sabotaging themselves by airing these specials at 7am. Luckily, not many people watch VH1 at 7am. They only program 3 primetime hours per week with new content. They need all the help they can get to keep their ratings average up.

9. Hell’s Kitchen (2.659 million 0.8)- This moved back to Fridays a couple of weeks ago (to make room for the return of Empire) and the numbers have taken a little bit of a hit. I’m not a fan of using shows as stopgaps. They tend to hurt the shows and they really only put a band-aid on a bigger issue the network is facing.

10. Bad Girls Club: Twisted Sisters (487,000 0.3)- This tried to show some life for the episode 2 weeks ago, but then these numbers slipped right back down to a season low. Does the show try to rebound tonight? It can try. Oxygen really needs it to do that.
