10 Ratings Blurbs: 11/18/14 Edition

This may look like a week of head-scratching decisions made by the networks but it really isn't when you consider the histories of the shows in question.

1. Sons of Anarchy (4.380 million 2.2)- The series finale for this show is fast approaching and perhaps the ratings are starting to pick up a little bit of steam. These numbers still aren’t outside of the realm of normal territory for this show so it could be one of those things where the fans have decided to stick with it until the end and there may not be much casual interest to see how it all wraps up.

2. American Horror Story: Freak Show (3.647 million 1.8)- I believe this is the first episode this season where the demo has gone below 2.0 and for this show that’s a very good sign. It seems like this may be a slightly stronger season than normal and FX can’t ask for a better scenario because they don’t tend to have good luck with shows holding up after handing out early renewals.

3. Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons (1.828 million 0.9)- This show has actually grown a little bit from the premiere. It’s a good sign for E! and it may be a good sign for the Kardashian franchise in general because it gives the network a blueprint of what to focus on to appeal to viewers while they continue the nearly impossible task of cultivating a crop of stable shows fit enough to replace this.

4. Vanderpump Rules (1.290 million 0.7)- A couple weeks ago I said I didn’t trust these numbers. I thought they were decent for a show airing without Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and I wanted to see how they would hold up. So far the show is holding up pretty well. There wasn’t a big second or third week drop and the numbers have been steady. For a network that can’t find much traction in a good chunk of their shows this is a very good sign.

5. America’s Next Top Model (1.19 million 0.4)- The CW renewed this show yesterday and I’m not all that surprised. These numbers have been steady over the last 3 cycles where it will have some good weeks and some bad weeks mixed in there. I suppose it will follow the same schedule as usual after this season comes to an end and that means the show won’t be back until August.

6. The Mindy Project (2.47 million 1.1)- Several weeks ago I made mention of paying attention to the episode count for this season because that would likely be the determining factor of the fate of this show regardless of the awful numbers. When the season premiered FOX only ordered 15 episodes for the season. On Friday they ordered 6 more bringing the total to 21 which would practically constitute as a full season for this show. Since this is a third season show and it has now gotten this far those 6 extra episodes means FOX will likely be willing to suffer through one more season and that may very well be possible because I can see them ending this show and New Girl together and trying something new in 2016.

7. Couples Therapy 5 (631,000 0.3)- This show has seen better days in its 5 seasons and it has seen worse days. I really have no clue what VH1 is going to do with this show. It does have the numbers to earn another season on Wednesday or Thursday and I suspect they may attempt to make another season. However I cannot ignore the fact that their shows have a habit of disappearing either for long periods of time or forever after their 5th season and that is always a possibility here.

8. Elementary (6.53 million 1.0)- Friday CBS shocked a lot of people by canceling The Millers. Now that show is nothing like this one because that show is a comedy, it had much lower ratings and it was a second year show. This is a third year drama but these ratings are getting to the point where you have to wonder how low this show can go before CBS throws the syndication economics out in favor of cutting their losses. For now I still have to believe they will shuffle this to the farm (Sunday or Friday) once they make room for it.

9. Gotham (6.49 million 2.3)-Not much has gone right for FOX this season and not much will probably go right come January. That being said, this could be doing a lot better but the main goal for this show is pretty much to not flop and it is doing that so you won’t hear any complaints about these numbers.

10. Tiny & Shekinah’s Weave Trip (1.564 million 0.9)- The other 2 Monday shows had a pretty noticeable rise in the numbers this week. This show was also up from last week but not by the same margin. I didn’t believe this show would do all that well and in my estimation the show is hanging in bubble range. I wish I had a little bit more recent history to go on but I think the fate of this show may be tied to the fate of the show this replaced (Atlanta Exes). Whatever happens to that show may outline a probable blueprint for this one since both have very similar numbers and VH1 isn’t jumping at labeling either one a hit.
